Up to last year I used to be a regular guest at SGS but haven't ever stayed at Westin.

I really liked SGS, especially the pool and rooms were among the best in Bangkok and because I was Starwood platinum I was upgraded to a suite almost every stay.

In those days I stayed about 50/50 between SGS and JW Marriott. In my opinion SGS always beat JW Marriott on rooms and pool. But I stopped staying at SGS because they don't really have an executive lounge. OK I like their live jazz band when I'm free during the hours they are playing.

But otherwise JW's exec lounge is primarily what keeps me going there.

I used to know the Gen Manager at SGS and I told him often if SGS had an exec lounge like JW Marriott, I (and many other frequent guests) would stay exclusively at SGS.

Anyway... a couple of questions for any recent guest at SGS & Westin...

1- Does the SGS "library" or the lounge area now offer wireless?

2- How does Westin Exec lounge compare with JW Marriott ?

I have also tried both - as well as a load of other hotels over a very long period of time. Must say I used to like Westin a lot - but have not stayed there now for more than a year. Feel disturbed over the price beeing boosted they way it has and they are not alone. Think I saw some article that hotels in Bangkok has increased prices over 30% in general over just a few years! Sure - if the market is there and people pay their inflated charges - the owner I am sure is quite happy!
For me it is not really worth it thowing good money away - when there are still good options at other rates. But Westin and Shearton qualitywise is of course nice places!

And dont forget the rather high internetcharge they also put on top of the already steep roomcharge!

Yes there are wireless in the jazz lounge, was there in may

Only tried the lounge at Westin, and its pretty good, was there for 10 days, and already the second day they know just what I want, and the selection there is pretty good, and a very friendly staff.

The sheraton is better for the great pool, but the westin is not too far off (due o crappy pool).

I have noticed prices have increased a lot more at these hotels than some of the other big names. I think I paid $110/night three years ago and now you are looking at $200+.

Both of them as well as the JW are way overpriced now. Not worth it. Try Landmark for about 1/2 price best deal around that area and for such a hotel level.

Cheers!

Because they can - as there are plenty of suckers that consider $200 a great price, and love to brag what a deal they got when they get in for $150.

Smart moves on the hotel's parts to artificially increase their perceived values.

I use to stay at the Sheraton and Westin all the time 3-4 years ago, but now much happier staying at Serviced Apartments. Especially for long periods.

Bigger rooms, No Hassle, A real Kitchen with a real fridge. All for less then half the price (If not more) of a place like the Sheraton.

baqwuan,

agree serviced apts are much more economical now. I used to be able to get westin for 70-80 USD 2-3 years ago. great deal, don't know what happened to their prices.
wondering which serv apts you like. I really liked the emporium, but also going up in price. anything similar for 100USD? thanks.

Baquawan which serviced hotels do you recommend?

I stayed in Sheraton Grande this last weekend using their $60 rate plus points. But I can't stay there many nights at the $60 + points rate before I use up all my points.

But anyway I should say that after almost a year, I remembered the SGS positives. They don't have an executive lounge that can compete with JW Marriott but there rooms sure are a lot nicer.

The Jasime Executive Apartments (Corner of Suk Soi 23) is my place of choice. Although the Jasmine prices have also gone up the past few years. It is still a great deal. Great location. You can spit down to soi cowboy. Down the street from Glow.

I just reserved their 58m one bedroom for about $800 for 14 days. They also let me store a few bags there since I am in and out a lot.
