Sometime half (maybe 20%) the fun is slumming it.
You know going up North, sleeping on the floor...squating to take a shit....scooping water out of a plastic blue barrell to take a cold shower....going out 3 times a day to hit a market for meals....mosquitos everywhere (ok, not fun)....driving thru muddy pot holed side roads...............makes for great stories when you get back home.

Being a newbie I have never stayed at the Nana before, but have booked for second week June
I have read this debate, but I feel this post seems to have gone from balanced views, to biased opinion
Anyway I'll let you know what I think of this 'legend' Hotel
I'm bringing the real version of the '40' year old virgin with me however after he read your posts, I couldn't convince him to stay here - something about "missing their money shot" stains on the walls or carpet...come on guys ! (personally I don't believe you)
Anyway I want to shock him with a first night out 'Dr Love' Tour ! Recommended ?

Absolutely. I highly recommend the Doc's tour - especially if you have a newbie with you. The Doc will take good care of him and help ensure that the only shocks are good ones.

Congrats on booking the Nana, a venerable institution. It is everything you've heard about on this thread, and less, lol! Yep, there really are stains from the missed money shots, cigarette burns in the carpet, and even a few rooms that are nice. As I've said here before, my TGF's comment about the Nana: "Nana Hotel always smew [smell] bad!" which she says while screwing her face up into a cute look of disdain. Of course, she's stayed there with me in the distant past, and my partner in crime in LOS won't stay at any other place... location, location, location.
Enjoy it, it is unique in some very interesting ways.

Outside of a few posters, most of us don't seem very interested in scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to girls, so why bother with half-assed hotels either? If you want to rough it, then get the hell out of BKK and go rough it where it really counts (and no, that doesn't mean Pattaya). All this talk about the location of the Nana hotel seems like hogwash to me. There are plenty of decent 3-5 star hotels all around the area.
As for the Dr. Love tour, what does he bring to the tour that you can't get from this and other websites? I'm not trying to bash, just curious. Maybe he's a lot of fun to hang out with or he can get the prices down somehow? Or is he mainly for the uninitiated who just can't seem to get themselves out of their hotel room? Personally, I don't feel like that until the end of my trips, at which point it might actually be nice to have someone running a little interference.

Ok you have come on here and say to us get the hell out of BKK and rough it. If Pattaya is not the place, where are you talking about ? No problem with members giving opinions or bagging a place, but they do not give the alternatives to the places or things they have bagged.
So in your opinion, where would you go to 'rough it' where it really counts ?

I've stayed at the Majestic Suites and the JW Marriot and they were just a hop, skip, and a jump around the corner from Nana. In fact I could look right down on the whole Nana scene through my window in both hotels.
Other great hotels like the Landmark are just a few steps more. A friend of mine even found a hole-in-wall place for $15 per night that's just across Sukhumvit and still looked cleaner than the Nana. It doesn't matter if you're willing to spend $125 or $25 per night, you can still beat the Nana hotel easily and if you're really hard-up for cash, just cross Sukhumvit heading up Soi 3 and look for a narrow hole-in-the wall on the right for $15 per night.
Also, you don't have to actually stay in the Nana hotel to experience most of the craziness. Just walk-in anytime and pickup whoever you wish or wait for everyone to rush the parking lot once the music stops. Personally, the whole 'rite of passage / hazing ritual' angle that gives the Nana hotel its faux mystique just doesn't do much for me. The BKK sex scene is already tacky enough without having to also sleep in a tacky place as well.
Although I'm a whoremonger myself most of my friends aren't, and if I was taking a newbie to Thailand I sure as hell wouldn't waste their time and jinx their first impression by suggesting the Nana hotel. That's called overkill in my book. Besides, as a whoremonger I've already stayed in more than enough dingy hotels with odd stains and musty odors. Why put up with that crap when you have perfectly good hotels just a few feet away? It just doesn't make sense to me.
