If you can throw your drinks free in that 5* hotel I'm all for it... ! If I need to go to the end of soi 18 and stay in that hotel to get a drink - sorry pal, not for me LOL can buy my own drinks....
I suppose economy starts to take its toll... if you need to make such drastic specials during the high season... or perhaps its the many new hotels that got open in good places such as the Darjeeling that takes away from Town Lodge? As for:

Not sure if The Interchange is actually open for tourist business. We can look down on it from our hotel (Jasmine, right across the street), and the floors that we can see into are completely empty shells. Certainly, it is possible that some are actually available now...
In the next couple of days I think I will wander over to the Darjelling to take a look. Might be a good alternative in the area.
Town Lodge, for me, is a good choice for a good price. I would happily stay there as long as Wowser wasn't in a room next to me. However, the TGF (soon to be promoted to wife) says its too far to walk to Sukhumvit. Oh well...

No no, that walking distance is strategic: it makes TL hotel a wifey-free zone (don't mix with Wifi - they have that...) The wifey-free thing may come in handy... sooner or later...

Thank you. It will be quite a new experience, since neither of us have been married before.
Took from Nov 28th, 2007 until Sept 17th, 2008 to get her USA Visa, but all is set now.
Maybe I will start a "TG in Tahoe" thread...
BTW, TG and I met BK and friends at Gulliver's a couple of days ago. TG remembered BK and even called him by name before I even saw him. And, the last time TG saw him was about 2 years ago. What a memory.

according to friends in the travel industry, bookings are up more than 50% in november and december.

I think will afect all, incl. big hotels, especially given the many new 5 star rooms added this/next year.
Remember in 1997 when the Thai Bhat went to 50 per US$? Then all hotels became "cheap" for tourists. Similar thing needs to happen soon, perhaps via letting the Thai Bhat go down...?

My TGF and I just took a look at the Darjelling.
Tim and ErikE have already provided a lot of information. I'll try not to duplicate.
4 floors of room, 5 to a floor. All room are identical in size at 25sqm. On each floor, 4 of the rooms have king size bed and 1 has twin beds. 1 of the king size rooms on each floor has NO EXTERNAL WINDOW. All rooms are the same price, window or no, and king vs. twin.
Rooms small, but nice. Has everything mentioned by Tim. The bathroom is very nice.
Each room has a safe.
No wired internet, only wireless.
There is no sign on either Soi 18 or Sukhumvit to indicate where the hotel is. The staff said "soon". You cannot see this hotel from the street, it is in a courtyard.
The indoor pool is on the ground floor. Very small. Has jets spraying underwater on one side. If a good pool is important to you, this would be a negative. Breakfast area really small and next to reception. 5 tables if I remember right. Breakfast from 6am - 11am, but can be extended.
Walk in rates as follows:
2,200bt Oct - Jan
1,950bt Feb - Apr
1,600bt May - Sept
As advertised, it is very close to Exchange Tower and the Soi 18 walking overpass, so access to Soi Cowboy and MRT/BTS very easy.
Assuming nothing changes for the worse, my TGF voted for it the next time we need a room for a couple of days in BKK.
