The last time that I stayed in the Landmark hotel I paid about 4500 Baht for a room with breakfast. ( around 10 Months ago )
I would like to stay again in the Landmark but the prices which I found on the web are around 6500 Baht a night. ( 45% increase )
This makes the Landmark even more expensive then the Marriot and others.
I know that the Landmark is good but not that good and I would think twice to stay again there.

Checking the Landmark's website (at the time of this post) cheapest rate USD 105 (weekend Package),USD120 (superior room Landmark floor), USD140 (superior room Landmark floor with club benefits).

From the Marriott website - JW Marriott is USD170 weekend (cheapest rate) to USD192 Weekdays (cheapest rate), and USD250 for the Executive (Club) floor.

If you go to these websites you can book them for next week.

Now based on the several trips I make to LOS on business each year all of the rates at both of these hotels have gone up about USD 10 since November.

Rates from China Sailor are good.

However, the rates from the hotel's own website exclude tax and service, and don't include breakfast.

So a standard superior room is $US140.40 a night tax and service included, without breakfast. At, say, 33.8 to the dollar, that's THB4745.

If breakfast is worth THB200 including tax and service, that becomes THB4945 a day, or THB5145 for a double.

The hotel website probably hasn't adjusted exchange rates since the latest $US fall, so gives good value compared to internet sites which adjust FX regularly and generally quote inclusive of tax, service and breakfast.

Merijn's broader point is valid, I think. On his figures he's looking at an increase in Thai Baht of 10% or more in 10 months for a room with breakfast.

The Landmark is far from the worst on the inflation front. In 2003 the Amari Atrium rate was $46, now it is $93 and up. Doubled in 4 years, hotel unrenovated.

If they can get away with these rates, no doubt there'll be even more new hotel construction, and if the cycle follows its usual pattern, an eventual hotel room glut, before some price discounting.

For the moment, however, there's much less value in Bangkok, hotels included, and you'd expect at some point that would impact both inbound tourism numbers and average duration of visits.

Merijn won't be the only one shopping around.

shoke,

Hotel website is misleading, and I wonder what rate of exchange they are using?

In this case then,

I know you can get The Superior Landmark Floor Twin/Double for about 4800 Baht. Includes breakfast and all taxes.

The reason I brought this point up is because when I checked several reservation website ( asiatrevel ) I found the Landmark for 6150 Baht, JW Marriot 5910 Baht and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit for 6100 Baht.
I know that the prices are almost the same but when I stayed in the Landmark about 10 Months ago the prices defference was much greater. I never paid more that 4400 Baht for the Landmark. And I don't think that you can put the Landmark in the same group as the JW Marriot and Sheraton. The bottom line is that the Landmark increased the prices with muce more then 10% which the other hotels did.

Best is to book on the Landmark site. You also have a chance to be upgraded and you are charged in US$. They have a best rate guarantee so if you find something cheaper, let them know and they will match it or beat it. The complimentary upgrade is on a best case bassis but usually if you book with them directly they may accomodate you (ask nicely when check in, as well as its good to be a repeat customer, join their club etc.). If you want to stay long time, email them and see if they can give you a good deal. The Landmark is the best deal in town, in terms of value, location, etc. Much better than the JW, SGS and Westin.

You can take a look at their hotel site: http://www.landmarkbangkok.com/frame_promotion1.html and also look around the site and email them directly. Given the best rate guarantee policy, no other travel agent can compete with this, as they will match in case you find cheaper. The $120++ (at say 35B per US$) comes to B4943 incl service and taxes. US$ is weaker actually the out of country rate is something like 33.50B per US$ so the above will actually be 4731B. Not to mention this will include conversion rates (if you are charged in US$) which are 3% extra or more so you really pay just about 4600B. Yes, prices went up through all of BKK so for the upgraded Landmark it is a good deal still. As for breakfast - try to find a site that gives you the breakfast or go for the club floor which includes it (more expensive but you get club access assured with all the comps it offers). If you find a site that offers regular room with breaky at about same prices let them know by email - they will match it. Enjoy!

EDIT IN: The Summit group has a promotion for American Express card holders. Which includes upgrade and free breakfast and better rates. See: http://www.preferredhotelgroup.com/staymore/
Main cite is at: http://www.summithotels.com/index.cfm
The Landmark is in the list of this offers at: http://www.summithotels.com/hotel_horizontal.cfm?id=26599 showing rates as low as $98 and it includes breakfast and upgrade to a better room if you have the American Express card (or can get one these days not a big deal). Also if you join their frequent guest program - I Prefer - you may get free internet use, special offers, free upgardes, etc. It is free to join: http://www.iprefer.com/ProgramInformation/tabid/148/Default.aspx
Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Ap.-

I'm not sure I 'm ready to predict what will happen 12 years out, but I would say that hotels in general have gone up significantly in the last 12 months. Cheap ground costs used to be my best excuse for basing my travel out of Bangkok but soon that will no longer hold water. I can stay in the Regent in Singapore for less than the Landmark or even the Grand President. This can't go on forever.

Cost of the same accomodations in 2003: 1,750 THB
Cost of the same accomodations now: 1,900 THB

Changes since 2003:

- addition of high speed elevators (much needed, and work great now)
- remodel of pool area (was nice previously, but better now)
- remodel of all rooms (very nice improvement)

Personally, the 150 THB in difference are well worth it, as I see where the money is going, and as such the $5 difference in the price over 4 years is negligible.

Though I can see how 'bigger name' hotels will raise their rates, because they can.
