Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 28 November 2007 :- Le Méridien Bangkok to open on Surawong - B2bn property to begin service in April 2008 ====================================================== Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc, in collaboration with Thai Charoen Corporation Group (TCC), will open a new hotel in the heart of Bangkok under the Le Méridien brand, with an investment of two billion baht. The new Le Méridien Bangkok will be located on a 1.97-rai plot on Surawong Road in the Silom area. The 24-storey property will house 282 guest rooms, two restaurants and two bars. Room sizes will range from 36-126 sq m and room rates start at around 5,000 baht per night. It is scheduled to open in April. ''We see a high opportunity to grow in Thailand. We are also confident that the new concept of chic, cultured and discovery will attract creative guests who are our main target group,'' said Jee Hoong Tan, the hotel's director for sales and marketing. The number of the ''creative'' guests has been rising fast in recent years. These people usually reside in big cities such as Singapore and Dubai and in Europe but are looking for exotic places that have potential to inspire them. And they know that the Le Méridien brand has what they are looking for, according to Mr Tan. ''That's why we are meticulous in all details of the facilities, even toothpicks. This distinguishes us from our rivals,'' he said. Mr Tan said the company hoped for a 53% occupancy rate in the first year, to increase to 75% in 2009. About 90% of its guests would be foreigners. Le Méridien Bangkok will become the first property in Thailand to embody all of the new brand initiatives after the brand was acquired by Starwood in November 2005. Plans are also afoot to gradually rebrand its three existing hotels in Thailand under the same concept. Currently, Le Méridien manages three properties in Thailand: Plaza Athénée Bangkok, Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort and Le Méridien Khao Lak Beach and Spa Resort. In addition to the new property in Bangkok, Starwood plans to open four more hotels in the next two years, one each in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Suvarnabhumi (in Samut Prakan) and Pattaya. Le Méridien now manages a total of 1,091 rooms in Thailand, to be increased to 2,383 in 2009. For next year, Mr Tan views that competition in the hotel business will intensify as new hotels and serviced apartments will be added to the supply. As well, he said, the Thai hotel and tourism-related businesses would be affected by big events in regional countries including China, which will host the Olympic Games next year. He added, however, that the hotel business next year could be better than this year, depending on the policies of the new government.
