Hello chaps, first off forgive me if some of my posts come across as newbie. I guess with only one trip to Los before, I am a newbie. I'm making an effort to read as much as I can before posting My question is that with a potential trip planned from mid November to early Jan, Which I am now looking at 6 weeks, compared to 7-8. I want to know how booking will be high season. My ideal scenario would be to book my first week or so, in Bkk, and then move between pattaya, phuket, samui, on a sort of book as I go basis. I like to have the freedom to move between places, as i'm not sure how things will pan out when i'm in Los. I may not want to stay in a particular area for too long, and like the freedom to move about. Especially as this is a much longer trip than my last. I'm aware with that freedom comes risk, more so in the high season, and i'm looking to try and stay in as many girl friendly hotels as I can. I can do without paying an extra 500 baht fee, for bringing a girl as I have been charged in the past at Baiyoke Sky, and twice in Phuket. Even though it would be hassle free to some extend, I just can't imagine pre-booking an entire 6 week trip, rather than just moving from city to city when it feels right. At the same time I am on budget, and can't afford to be paying a high price in the peak season. Which I guess could be a consequence of late/last minute bookings. My accomodation budget, is looking like 60,000 bht over 44 days, which roughly will be a daily room budget of around 1500. Roughly So guys this is a bit of a dilemma, i'm in two minds. What advice can u give Thanks

If I was fortunate enough to get that amount of time with so many different destinations I'd arrange to meet with my Thai travel agent (like right now) and have her help me put a vacation like this together. (especially w/only one trip under your belt) In the time period you mention I'd give up the flexibility for the peace of mind of knowing my room is reserved and the price I will pay I think your going to find it a big hassle trying to get a hotel room during peak high season w/o a reservation, you'll risk going over budget and not get the best location Winging it sounds good but low season would be better for that Have my hotel room in PTY for Nov., it's a good feeling to have that taken care of

I'd agree with don5252 in that respect - the peace of mind outweighs any savings you think you will realize. I generally always book my one 'HQ' hotel for the duration of my trip, even if I know I will be going on trips to islands or elsewhere during that time - it saves me either having to travel heavy, or making arrangements to stash my luggage, plus I know for sure that I will have a place to call home, no matter what. I have a friend who often does not do that (we joke about "What days is it today, and what hotel is he in today?") and while he realizes certain benefits, he does deal with the aforementioned hassles, and sometimes does not get the hotel he wants, or ends up compromising or being shuffled around. To me, not worth it, to you, maybe. Just something for you to consider.

Really good advice Don & Daffy I guess the primary issue here is the time, as you guys said I could prob risk it in low season, just not in peak I guess it just means, trying to map out and plan the whole trip, each desination how long for etc etc It's a shame, but i'm simply not going to be travelling in low/mid season to have the flexability that I want.

Daffy are u sugguesting that u book a hotel as a safety net, for a certain duration, of time, even if you go to other islands/cites. So that u can go and come back, and have your room ready? When you travel heavy, are u saying that you leave stuff in your room for days if you are away, how safe is that? Do you tell the hotel staff, so that they dont give the room to someone else thinking you have left?

If you are talking about larger places (BKK, Phuket, Samui, Pattaya), it is very, very unlikely you would not be able to find a hotel in your budget with a couple of days notice. I have never failed in any of these places, even in Nov and Dec. You can call around and try to book it yourself, or get some help from any travel agent in Thailand. There is zero chance of you showing up in BKK, Phuket or Pattaya in Nov or early Dec and not being able to find a room with a day or two notice. The exception will be the 2 weeks around Christmas and New Years. Accommodation everywhere is very tight then, or at least that is what I hear. Personally, I have never been in Thailand for Christmas or New Years.

Yep. Let's say I go on a 2 week vacation - I might book my room in my BKK hotel for the whole two weeks, even if I end up going to Koh Chang for 5 days, or Pattaya for 2 days. It gives me the flexibility that, if I change my mind, return early, or whatever, to be able to return to my hotel and not have any hassles. There's also a certain secondary safety factor, that since I pre-pay for my entire stay, that should something 'bad' happen, and I lose my money and credit cards, or whatever else, I will have a place to stay, without worries.

Depending on the hotel of your choice, it is very safe - I have never had any troubles or problems at my favorite hotel. Additionally, when I travel with friends, we usually pool everyone's luggage in my room - occasionally, some of my friends pitch in with a portion of the cost, which is nice, and benefits everyone.

If a room is booked, and paid for, and you have taken ownership of it at the beginning, they can not give it away. I usually tell the reception as a courtesy, that they don't need to clean the room for the next X days, since I won't be there. That's about it.

It's a ball, and surreal mak mak... MUCH more fun when not in Bangkok for Christmas, but New Year's is pretty cool.

Bootydaddy, Its all about trade-offs. If you are comfortable with uncertainty go without a planned hotel itinerary. Sometimes you will get what you want, sometimes you will pay more than you want and be stuck somewhere you don't want to be (maybe no girl friendly). If you are on a tight budget, it is likely that without a plan you will end up a few times with less than you want. If you have more money to spend you have more flexibility because you can afford the more expensive room that will still be available when all of the bargains are booked where you want to stay. Flexibilty that you crave is a factor of comfort with uncertainty and a fairly flexible budget. Personally I would not trade off budget for partying in order to pay for hotel rooms. Up to you. But honestly, I have the luxury of a very flexible budget but envy you greatly for your time flexbility. I have been to LOS many times over the years but have never had 6 weeks of vacation there. My visits are always mixed work and pleasure and never last more than 5 says at a time. Usually they occur every month, but still 6 weeks straight is fantastic.
