First time staying here, I've enjoyed the buffet, and thought it was time to vett it a little more closely. Also, I procrastinated and couldn't get a good deal on any of the sites. I found a "Family and Friends" link on a travel site that offered this place for about what any of the other 5* rooms were going for, and it included Club Floor status (meaning free brk/dinner snacks/internet). So it was the best deal available. In terms of this report I've stayed Le Meridien, JW, SGS, Westin, Conrad in the last two years, so my perspective is fresh. Long story short, it's in 3rd place, current rankings are: SGS/JWM tied for 1st, this place next, then Le Meridien (lose's lots of points for the long walk to BTS, but by far the best breakfast), and I won't be staying at Westin or Conrad again. Okay, here's some details. I don't really care for the "grand" lobby, anywhere short of a castle it's pretentious if out of scale, and outside of castles they usually are. This one is. The staff is great from the curbside through check in (in room if you're on Club Floor, which I was). I found them always personable and helpful (like when I needed condoms at 1 a.m, in the room in 10 minutes) They slipped a little with the newspaper, I prefer the IHT and ask for it in lieu of the Nation/Post. They missed the notice and I had to remind the Club Floor desk, they did fix it the next day, and thereafter. My deal limited me to breakfast in the Club Lounge, ala carte items were well prepared, buffet selection limited but adequate. No match for the offers at SGS or JWM. Dinner snacks were also a little less than SGS or JWM, but more than enough in lieu of a dinner out. The free pour wine, for free of course, was good. Good selection of liquors and beers as well. Lounge was sparsely used by other guests, no issues with service or frenzied locusts at the feed trough at all. The gym was pretty good, equipment was new and good quality. Staff was available and helpful. Spa area, sauna, steam, jacuzzi, showers, etc. were good, but not at the level of SGS. Bathroom amenities in the room were a little weak for quality, only in comparison to other 5*. GF and courteous as well, no ID required. She said she felt fine walking through the lobby, didn't detect any "vibe". Saw a "hook up" show up, well dressed, breezed up to the front desk, chatted a minute, sat nearby, and pretty soon a guy strolls over, goes through the introductory bonafides, and off they head for the elevator. If he hadn't of shown up I would have been hard pressed not to impersonate him, she was a looker. Location is great, though looking out my window every morning at the burnt out hulk that was Zen/Central World is an unneccessary reminder of how finely balanced Bangkok is. I prefer to skim above the city, BTS to where I want to go, 5* cocoons to insulate me when I want. I get enough of the grit at home.

Thanks for the report. I stayed at this hotel several years ago when it was managed by Le Meridian, they had a nice pool on the roof and rooms were comfortable, but I also much preferred the JW and SGS.
