Forgive my ignorance or impertinence, atl and all you westerners, but it always puzzles me why you guys need to plan your Christmas and New Year's trips as early as March -- 9 months in advance ?!

Let's just assume in the above case this westerner (as opposed to say an Indian ) might have planned to spend New years Eve on holiday and Through evolution of brain function callculated that this time of year might be busy.
So Planned to make sure he had a room etc.

I don't know what you are talking about, I'm already packed 
kidding, to answer your question though it is because I have learned over the last two years that flights over Christmas/New Years go up about 4 to 5 hundred bucks around June

Yes its a case of the early bird gets the whores
For example a normal (non-holiday season) fare for me, return to Bangkok is $800-$900. Xmas time the fare will be up to $1700. However if I book now for an Xmas getaway then I can get the fare for $1000

That figures, thanks. What I was thinking, however, is that low apex fares booked as early as 9 months, for instance, would also carry very stiff cancellation or date change rules. In some real low fare bargains they allow virtually no change of date or refund. In case you have to change your travel dates you lose all that you paid. Maybe it's not so over there ?
