I'm scheduling my next week, in mid-May. Any members stay at the Hansar? My priorities are; near BTS (within 100m), great breakfast, good to great gym. Also, last trip was at Sivatel over on Wireless. There was a new "6*" going up across the street, according to the staff. Any knowledge on this? There was also a new hotel with a cantilevered pool going up right on Suk. Is this open now? Thanks...

Stayed at HANSAR some time ago for 4 nights. I have my favorite (Maduzi) but also like to try new thinks. Nice upscale hotel, nothing to complain, rooms 5-star standard, breakfast as well, girl friendly, however, location is kind of remote. You won´t get either disappointed nor enthusiastic.

Thanks Tim, any other 5* you'd recommend over or instead of Hansar to try this next trip? I'm always looking for the best QPR, whether it's red wine or 5* hotels. As you know, I like to try new places. As nice as Sivatel was last time, it would have to be under a $100 to lure me back. In the $150-200 range there seems to be more appealing properties. My first choice is Marriot group due to status, then Sheraton. But in BKK there's just so many stand alones or non-US based chains and the values can be compelling. Side note, I just got status matched to Shangri-la Jade for some reason or another thru AmEx Platinum. I've never stayed there, but it always has seemed to touristy/conference oriented to me. Long story short, I think the JW still has the best mix of improvements, services, and location. princeinnocent never stayed Maduzi, thought it was a bit of a walk up from Asoke, or am I confused? Is it a 5*? I've only seen it rated as such on travel websites that are soft graders. I'd give it a try at the right rate if it meets my criteria.

... that well-run Thai 4-star 'value' buy is what keeps the international 5-star rates in BKK relatively low and the international 5-star hotel sector's profitability depressed. ... I've had BKK hotel market analyses run several times over the last 10+ years, and the rate spread between that high quality Thai 4-star (at USD 100-125) and the target rate for international 5-star (at USD 250-400) is too great for most 5-star tourist travelers to resist and 5-star business travelers to justify. ... to get occupancy, the international 5-stars can only play their better amenities, or drop rates. ... that is evidenced by the BKK Four Seasons Hotel, which has for years been the least profitable property in their global portfolio of 70, or 80 properties. ... Thai owners of these properties do not do particularly well... good for travelers, though. ... couple of suggestions: 1 - unsure how reliable tripadvisor.com surveys are, but Hansar was recently recognized by their customers as one of best in class; and, 2 - Starwood's St. Regis Hotel opened here last year... nicely done.

Jimmy, Have some loyal Sheraton Grande customers who swear by the service. I would go for Hansar. Heard really good things from this hotel and the rooms are new. Rated number 6 on Tripadvisor. Tim

Good overview Magnum, I assume you're in the biz? I know the operations must be operating thin, I enjoy taking advantage of the competitiveness after all the times I've paid $200+ for a 3* in a crap location in the States, or $125+ for a 2* in Europe. I just paid $450 for a Renaissance in Sao Paulo, and a 5* there is $850+. So...Bangkok has been a great place to balance things out. St. Regis would be interesting, butler service is standard for all rooms there isn't it? GF? RTB, how's the gym at the Maduzi? Good location, but I like more than a few treadmills and some multipurpose machines. The JW is the standard of excellence in hotel gyms since it's purposed as a fee health club as well. The Landmark has same strategy, but there the club is too damn big/busy/loud. And if I'm gonna stay at a 4* I want it under $100 for sure. Tim, I'll be booking my air ticket this weekend, at that point I'll check iwth you and we'll see what offers the best deal.

I am involved in the hotel industry here and had the pleasure of staying at Hansar a few months after they opened. It is really a lovely place with interesting design. However, at that time the staff was still far from being up to 5 star standards... For example, most could not approach a diner looking at them to ask what was needed, etc... If they have improved their training, it would be very nice indeed.

... been about the property sector a bit. ... you might find rooms at the BKK St. Regis' lower price points one of the absolute best values in the luxury hotel sector anywhere in Thailand... even Asia and beyond.
