Has anyone stayed at the Baiyoke Suites hotel? Is it near any soapys? I hear it is GF, but this will be my first trip for this newbie and don't want to be too far from the action. But will be staying for 7 nights, then Pattaya and then Phuket a week each. Thanks for any info on The Baiyoke.

There are actually two Baiyoke Towers next to each other. I assume you're referring to the lowest of the two ... the hotel is around 8-9 years. I toured it when it wasn't finished and looked quite nice (every suite offers two rooms a sitting area and a bedroom). Current state? No idea ...... thwe restaurant on the 43rd floor is nice though .... There are not a lot of soapies at walking distance (Chao Prya I and II), Mona Lisa is the next in mind (short taxi ride). But Ratchada is not too far away by taxi. In short ... 1 - hotel should be ok 2- location is good (in the middle of the budget shoping area) 3 - ok for soapies .... (gotta use a taxi though) 4 - GF as far as I know .... There's also a Baiyoke Hotel in Pattaya. Reasonable priced, good location, GF (although they had the policy to provide only one ABF) Perhaps they can offer you a free transfer to Pattaya.

Baiyoke 2 is the largest building in BKK. Went there for dinner at the 78th floor restaurant (Baiyoke Sky). See FR! Hotel looked very upscale. Saw asian tourists with cuties in tow, did not seem a problem.

Baiyoke Suites has extremely large rooms with a living area ans a seperate bedroom. A little worn out in my opinion. One inconvenience is that the T.V. is in the living/dining area while in the bedroom there is NO T.V. The lobby is not on the ground floor. I cannot remember exactly what floor the restaurant is on, 40 something, but it was great and you can sit outside on a little balconey if you like. The elevators directly face the reception desk. Baiyoke Sky rooms are very well decorated, the bathrooms are huge. I had suite which comes with an extra bedroom. As I said bathrooms are great with a bathtub I could stretch right out in. Breakfast is great. You need to board two elevators to get to your room. As far as girls, I never had a problem. I hold their hand and walk very confidently. But I do not know what would happen if you had two giggly girls in tow. However, I never see many pussy punters in either hotel. Both hotels are favoured by people involved in the clothes market (import/export) which houses a lot of stores on the ground floors at both hotels.

Baiyoke sucks because it's hard as hell to catch a taxi near there. Every taxi and tuk tuk is looking to rip you off. Expect to walk 10 minutes to find an honest taxi. Traffic there sucks.

^ I was just gonna post on the taxi mafia, so I'll second this. They must have a cosey arrangement with the boys in brown because NONE of the taxis in the district- day or night- will use their meter. I met an out of town friend and his Thai wife for an afternoon brunch there a few weeks back and even her Thai language got us nowhere. They wouldn't even give us a flat rate 'no meter' price!! And we were standing at the designated taxi stand with the boys in brown 5 meters away, no less. That said, however, the viewing platform and Dim Sum at the Chinese restaurant were both so good it made it worth the hassle.
