I usually stay at the Landmark although I have also stayed at the Manhattan, Majestic, and The Grand President.

I think the Landmark is amazing and totally 5 star. I have heard lots of people say that they think Landmark should be 4 star and that it is not as nice as JW. It is hard for to imagine what would make people say Landmark was 4 star, but I am deff. intererested to hear.

I would also really like to hear from people who have stayed at both JW and Landmark and which they think is nicer.

I wanted to try JW for 55 dollars thru priceline but that doesn;t seem to be happening anymore. I was thinking about the Sheraton and the Westin also as I have read that some people gotten those lately for 60 thru priceline. I know there are other threads that touch on these places but I am curious about actual comparisons.

I am thinking about paying full price (gasp) for a few days at the JW just to check it out. Also want to check out the Landmarks new rooms which sound real nice, anyone tried those?

Best regards to all-

JB

A quick review at http://www.biddingfortravel.com indicates that the JW Marriott may be going for closer to $75, while the Sheraton Grande and Westin might be in the $60 - $65 range? I've heard good things about all three properties with the deciding factor sometimes being your status level with the loyalty program which yields additional benefits like room upgrades and the like.

Mr Alan
The JW Marriott is definitely a cut above the Landmark and a cut above any Marriott I have stayed at in the US (and I have stayed at many). I would say the biggest difference was the bathroom, very large, large separate shower, lots of marble. But it is just a hotel room.

Some of the nicer serviced apartments, with large TV's and DVD's, kitchenettes, etc are actually just as nice and more comfortable in my opinion. A lot of the amenities offered by the Marriott that are a cut above the other hotels cost extra (like the restaurants).

Thanks for the info Mr. Alan. I am thinking about trying the President Solitaire also. Only problem is that I can be a real lazy bastard and am not very happy about the SOlitaires location. I think I will do 3 days at JW Marriott and 3 days at the Solitaire in June, unless I go the the beach for a few days...

I love thinking about all this stuff as it gets closer to the trip.

Location is important, especially in the hotter months like June. But it also depends on P4P location, or location for everything else. For everything else, Emporium is the best, and you can take the BTS skytrain to Nana before midnight. But it is expensive. The Sheraton is also close to the BTS skytrain. The JW Marriott is not all that close to the BTS skytrain for non-P4P activities.

The Landmark has recently had a very expensive facelift. Before that, it WAS getting a bit tatty at the edges - hence (I'd guess) people thinking it wasn't quite 5-star. Even now, it's not exactly high-end 5-star.

Great coffee shop though. Even better lounge for late-night digestifs or nightcaps.

jaybee,

Willing to pay full price at the JW Marriot just to stay there? I'm curious to know what you think is so special about the JW Marriott experience? Sure, it's a nice hotel. I've stayed there twice for a $55 Priceline bid, but I don't think I'd consider paying double for breakfast included.

If you want to spend some good money for a great hotel experience, allow me to tell you about where I stayed last weekend:

I had booked the Shangri-La on Priceline for a $55 bid. As a Golden Circle member (free, register on their web site), I had twice previously upgraded to a suite for an additional $25++/day at check-in (nearly 3 times the space). However, I was informed this time that the cost had risen to an additional $75++/day. Alternatively, I opted for a Horizon Suite for additional $100++/day, and was assigned to the 23rd floor, with magnificent views of the sunset and river. The price also included complementary hors'divrs (forgive my French) and drinks from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, and breakfast buffet until 11 AM. The food was quite outstanding, complimented with a (complimentary) very tasty Austrailan red wine. And I can put down quite a few glasses in two hours, even though the girl I brought with me from Pattaya only drank orange juice.

The Horzon suite was about the same size as the regular suites, 750 sq. ft., but better furnished with artwork and silk sofa. The bathroom was spectacular, with a circular shower, in white marble with shower head mounted to the ceiling between floodlights. You could pipe music in, and the shower was large enough for at least 6 people.

Total cost to me, using Priceline was about $185/day including tax. I believe the rack rate for their regular suites is $335. Of course, I was only able to upgrade because the suites were available when I checked-in. In my four stays there however, I've never stayed in a 'regular' room, which, I believe have a $155 rack rate.

re: JW Marriott.

For those that dont know Marriott Resorts reserve the initials JW (of the founder) for only their best properties. If you see it as a JWM you know you are going to get a good hotel.

I have stayed at JWM sukhumvit twice (June 99 and Jan 01). Both times it was a pleasure to stay there and I believe excellent value for money for both BKK and world standards.

The rooms are not new, but they are very clean with quality fittings and yes, a very large marble bathroom with big bath and separate shower. The pool area is very comfortable and the breakfast top notch. Location is great for Nana and I dont remember the walk to BTS being that long.

However the area I was most impressed is the service. The American management are quite obvious as you walk around the hotel. I have always thought that American management and thai staff is a great combination and this is very evident here. The staff are really helpful, courteous, knowledgable and generally speak reasonable english.

I cant see you being diasppointed.

I would not say that the JW Marriott is a "long" distance from a BTS Skytrain stop, but it is not nearly as close as the Sheraton and some other properties. The JW Marriott is about halfway between the Nana and Ploenchit stops, actually closer to Ploenchit stop.

Hey JB

I have stayed at both in Feb 04. You certainly can't criticise either hotel too much. However.....

My preference was for Landmark - I agree with Mr A, the bathroom in LM was half the size of JW and JW had a better finish etc. But then, how much time are you going to be in there??

Going on the internet at JW was a breeze, LM asked twice to be connected and nothing happened.... Also had a drama with the Limo to the airport, had to wait for them to confirm that I had paid etc - didn't have this problem with JW.

I think JW is a much better polished hotel and I didn't have anything that I could remotely complain about. But in saying that.....

For some reason or another, I just found LM to be more welcoming then JW. My preference will be to go back to LM unless they undercut them price wise, but if I have the same hiccups that I had in Feb, will probably stay at JW then after.

ohh BTW I stayed at the junior suite at LM which was upgraded to their "Landmark floor/level". You get complimetary cocktails in the afternoon, but I never got around to trying it. This had an additional living area which was nice to spread your wings but didn't really use it that much. Good if you had more than yourself and the tbg there having drinkies etc.

I think I stayed in the standard room at JW - didn't have the additional living area, but comparable in size with the JW (except for bth rm).

Cheers
Isee

PS - Also keen to give Solitaire a try out in my Jul/Aug trip, but also ummming and arring about the distance and price/star comparison with something closer to soi 4. Also, some taxi's don't know where this place is???.
