Hmm why didn't I notice this tread earlier!!!
way too much hiphop in this city now so I'd loved to hit DDM & Shadow even my 2 nights at Lava was pretty good as usual 
Lava often features both a sample of hot farang chicks & thai one's along with a fair chance to chat them up (if they don't chat one up first!). This kind of interaction I've seen much less at suzie & the club, but then again YMMV as always...

I did the rounds at Khaosan last night. The street itself was packed with the usual suspects, which is a mix of foreigners, Thais who go to watch foreigners, and Thais who sell things to foreigners.
As for the night spots mentioned above in this thread, first we went to Immortal. They wanted 500 Baht each and we did a U-Turn.
Next it was of to Susie Pub, which has changed little over the years. The place is still jammed with 20-something Thais out for dancing and group socializing.
While there, there was not a farang in the place. Mostly groups, very few girls in 2s, and quite clicky. That is not to say that the girls were not willing to meet us, but this place takes some time and work. Stunners abound, so it may well be worth it to put in an hour or two there.
Still, Susie is quite very dark, loud, and crowded, so we bailed after 30 minutes and two 70 baht beers. Not a bad price, huh?
Next, it was Hippie de Pub, or something like that. Very laid back; good for an outdoor drink. A good spot if you do happen to meet that Susie Pub catch.
Finally, off to Lava, which was more farang-oriented than Susie Pub, but the quality of talent dropped measureably. Good music, a semi crowded smalldance floor, and ladies more than ready to meet. But we were not impressed looks wise. Maybe it was too early (11:30) ? I am not sure.
Finally, we were off to Silom where things picked up during the witching hour.
All in all, Khaosan has its charms, which are the street life and some bars with good music. And, in some places, approachable women of various nationalities.
But I still prefer other scenes (Thonglor, Silom 4, Ratchada, Ekami) more.

hmmm, I like LAVA as well.. lots of girls, drinking and dancing out of their minds...while obviously the quality is not same as thong lo, its not supposed to be.. khao san is for thais with a lot lesser money than the folks who grace thong lo. so its ok.. what matters is their eagerness, and that adds a spice to the whole atmosphere.
at LAVA I did not find so much of back-packer intrusion, but yes, it is susceptible to it. all in all, if I want to have just sanuk and take my chances with hooking up with some cutie - many a times a freebie - I would prefer khao san to any other joint. besides, its not so far from other "last resort" places such as Rong Muang Soi 5 or even partunam for that matter (speaking of wee-hours of the night)..

On Friday I want to KSR to check out the clubs.
I got there around 10 P.M. and walked around a bit. Suzies was still empty; they have a 300 Baht cover so I decided to check out other places first and come back later. Well, I never made it back there.
Lava has no cover, so I walked in there to check it out; it was nearly empty when I got there. I decided to cool off before I continue, so I got a beer and sat down at the bar. By the time I finished the beer the place was packed. I'd say 80% Thai, several large (10-15 people) mixed groups, and lots of groups of 2-4 girls.
From what I saw, the girls didn't come there to get picked up. The ones in the mixed groups didn't mingle outside their groups at all. Many of the the groups of girls just danced together and brushed off any farang' attempts to mingled with them. Many othergirls did dance with the farang, but they were all leaving unaccompanied.
I guess if you're into clubbing and in your 20s this may be a place to find a GF, but it may take some time to develop.
After I left Lava I didn't quite feel like going home. I went into a non-descript hole-in-the-wall type of bar; drinks served from a cart, plastic chairs, you get the idea.
Not sure what time it was, the MiB came by on a motocycle and closed the place down. Except, when the iron gate was shut, the customers ended up inside rather than outside, and we were asked to move to the pool.
WTF?
Indeed, there was a pool and all of us, about 20-30 farang (a couple of whom where with TGs) moved to the pool area.
A few minutes later, two girls and two guys decided to go skinny-dipping. It was too dark to see much of anything and I'm not into voyering German girls, but all in all it was a nice cap for the evening.
After I came out, could've been around 2 or 3 A.M., there was still some foot traffic on KSR. Also, there were quite of few FLs hanging out, but the quality was even below what you can find in Thermae these days.
Btw, the place with the pool seems to be known as the after-hours place. As I was leaving, farang were coming over, clearly knowing what they were looking for, and the gate was definitely permeable.
