I go to RCA by taxi all the time and have never had a problem by saying soi RCA. Just remember that when you turn left off of petchburi in to Soi RCA (Where some girls gives the taxi guy a parking ticket) turn left at the next T intersection in front of you. That will take you down to where Slim, Flix, Route, Code, Etc are. Normally you will not be able to take a taxi all the way down to where these clubs are. You will have to get out of the taxi as far as it can go, and then walk the rest of the way down to where the clubs and people are.
When you leave at the end of the night. Continue in the same direction in which you came so that you come out on Ratchada road. Walk a little up the road to catch a taxi before everyone else.

^ Funny, this is just how I get there as well, but I've never thought to try saying to them "pay soi RCA kop." Some months back I discovered the Houserama Cinema there [from the T intersection you turn right and it's above the Tops supermarket] and went to their website, took a screenshot of their map, and loaded that into my cellphone address book. From the MRT Petchburi station- Mona Lisa MP side of the road -I'd then catch a taxi and just show them the map.
They've since changed the map- http://www.houserama.com/#
but if you go to their web page and follow the map link there's a great map that shows the area in question.

I have had some real bad experiences with taxi drivers in Bangkok ---- some are good but they obviously do not pass any knowledge test of Bangkok. I got into one at Siam Square and asked for Nana Plaza----a place that every cab driver should know, I ended up on a big highway heading for a toll booth before I bailed out. If you know you are going somewhere later in the day get your hotel reception to write it out for you in Thai, no guarantee but it will help.

One of the greatest stories about BKK taxi drivers was posted by RTB a year or so ago. I will try and recall it as best I can:
RTB gets into taxi and asks the driver to take him to RCA/wherever.
Taxi: Where is that?
RTB: You are taxi driver, You should know where it is.
Taxi: I not from Bangkok. I from Petchabun.
RTB: Why you not drive taxi in Petchabun?
Taxi: No business.
I understand RTB finally made his destination.

I have never been to RCA, maybe go on Valentines night, is it worth it for an old codger like me?
OK I am a young 60 and don't mind a limited amount of Techno if the rewards are to be had.
Is it a waste of time getting there before 12ish?
Maybe I will just loiter around until some TG feels sorry for me.
Alternatively I could stay on the Suk
