wow james bond saves the day ;p

the difference is gain of about £400 (on the amount I will be using on the trip) so im happy for your advice, I will look into that... I must admit though the idea TC being useless to anyone bar me is tempting... I hear that Credit and Cash card cloning is a problem in the land of smiles.

its too bad it takes so much saving to get there ;p but I get a feeling its worth it...

There are different solutions for different people. A resident ex-pat or very frequent visitor to Thailand has much different needs regarding money exchange than a once or twice-a-year tourist.

If you are bringing several thousand pounds or dollars that you'll be using during a short (weeks, rather than months) trip, then travelers checks are the best option. With almost all ATM-linked accounts that can be used internationally, you have to maintain a minimum balance for a certain time period, or charges kick in. It costs the bank money for you to open an account. They don't want people opening accounts that will be emptied in a few weeks. And to link a card that will be used in Thailand to your main bank account is crazy from the security angle.

Also, if the worst should happen, you can get TCs replaced in hours. It takes much longer, if it is even possible, to have an ATM card replaced.

I know this post has been flogged but just wanted to say I signed up for the flexi account today, its just as good as james bond said.

Note to the unwary, if you do the card option (bring two) in case a machine eats the first one! Imagine how screwed you would be with no money…

JETSETI.
that flexi account is great for me and the wife, we left a card with the thai wife family and so when she wants to send any money to her family she just puts the money in the nationwide account in the u.k, Then just sends a message to tell them how much to collect and it cost them nothing to take out any ATM machine and anywhere in thailand.
so if you do get a teerak just leave her the one card, so much better than the western union or paypal, a great way to send money to Thailand.
good idea taking out 2 cards, plenty times I have lost cards in the hole in the wall through stupidity or drunkeness.
good luck with the account jetseti.

For a slightly different perspective...

I went to BKK in stealth mode as the wife, and indeed everyone else save one good friend (he was to have my body shipped home if something bad happened) thought I was in DXB on a business trip.

Hence I was on a strict cash basis. I changed $200 at the airport to have something spendable in my pocket, then found a moneychanger office on SUK to exchange another $600.

This proved more than enough for the first weekend. I changed money two more times, once for spending and once to pay the hotel upon departure.

I had ZERO problems, the exchange rates were reasonable, nobody questioned my reasonably crisp $100 bills, the hotel safe did its job, and I was not robbed.

I brought $2800 in cash on my (8 day) trip, did not use it all, and had a great time with zero problems.

Sure the credit cards could have been used if needed, one always needs backup.

If you pre-pay your flights and hotel (though I did pay for my flights from DXB in cash and only secured my hotel with a CC, I paid them in cash as well) I see no real problem with bringing a reasonable amount of cash with you.

Those of you who do not require "stealth mode" have other options, but by being just a little careful, I see no problems working on a cash basis in BKK, at least for a short visit.

I have been doing this for a long time looking for the best deal and have found the combination many recommend to be the best. I travel with 5 crisp new $100 US bills, 500 in Tc's and my ATM. Best deal if you get free TC's is the TC but occassionally I have had a hassle with these. Next best deal is ATM. Last is cash but you can always exchange cash no matter what else happens. In the end, TC's cost a few baht and ATM costs about 1%. Either I can live with. Cash can be 1,5-3% which gets a bit costly but in a pinch cash always works. If there is a political problem or whatever cash always is king.

Does anyone know if you can change money late at night in the airport?

Yes, the money changers are still open late at night. Sometimes my flights get in midnight and they are open.
