Not sure if this should be posted in the hotel forum, but definitely a newbie question.
How common is it for hotels to accept cash deposits to cover potential incidentals in lieu of requiring a credit card?

I don't quite understand your "potential incidentals", unless the thought of the dry-cleaning costs to get rid of the chamber-maids' high heel marks on the bed-spread bubbles up in your brain as it does mine.
But if you mean, would the hotel be happy to accept cash payment in advance, I woulds say, yes, everytime.
But I'd be very careful of that. Firstly of course, I would need a receipt and secondly I would need the specific room or rooms that I was booking written on the receipt and a verbal assurance that if, for any reason, this did not occur, I would get all my money back and could go elsewhere.
However, if you went through a lawyer to write up a contract for you, you could add in a penalty clause : something to the effect of paying back double the amount you laid down or even a free leasing of the said chambermaids for the week.
As for how common it is, I haven't seen guys forking out cash at hotel cashier desks very often, unless it was to cover a long-time spell with the receptionist.
Having said that, my experience in hotels has of late, been rather limited. But then, that's my age. I don't get around much these days..................only Bangkok.
It's enough for me and my meagre needs.

The larger well known hotels always ask for a credit card for incidentals but if you tell them you dont have or would prefer to put down cash...no problem.
smaller and local hotels rarely use credit cards even for payment but all should be able to do this for you....again no problem.
Actually, have booked at major hotels and given my credit card but at check in have asked to pay cash and no problems.............
