Another question arises:

'How much do I save if I don't buy a suit?'

Cashmere, etc. etc. etc...

Darn, everything you wanted to know about cashmere...and then some! Good info - even if you spoiled the fun.

Now you've got me planning to get a cashmere topcoat on my next trip!!!

Not being such an afficionado, is it OK to select a fabric just because it 'looks good', or is there something more esoteric, i.e. wearability, status (among those in the know), etc. about a more experienced selection?

Good question! I suppose it depends on where you don't buy it from.

Not sure, but dan the dodge might be thinking about using this suit to smuggle in his stun gun, DVDs etc. So "not buying" a suit might not be an option for him, we'll have to wait n' see.

Cheers

To choose a good suit the first thing is to find a good tailor who is honest, diligent and has bags of experience. That he does not cut the cloth himself is not important.

The things I look for are:

1. service (this has to be experienced of course)
2. no special offers (e.g. 2 suits 5 shirts in 2 hrs only $99) as they indicate he is a tourist's tailor
3. cloth made outside of Thailand, preferably UK or Italy
4. Pure wool is my first choice and carrying the UK Woolmark but others prefer different fabrics
5. Personal recommendations from friends who wear suits every day (except Sundays)
6. Properly constructed collars with backing
7. Properly formed buttonholes on the sleeves, not just buttons tacked on
8. At least one interim fitting where the jacket maker is present

If he uses good quality imported cloth and constructs the suit properly then it should last for years and drape properly and be cheaper than buying clothes in department stores.

The ordinary trousers I wear in the office last about 5 years if worn twice a week and washed in the tub. The pockets never wear out and they never rip, just eventually become shiny from overuse. The shirts last indefinitely.

The Indian tailors can be very good in bangkok but the style can be a bit old fashioned. A good tailor will be able to discuss the options with you and help you choose the cloth for your requirements but you may wish to take GQ magazine with you if you want what Beckham wears.

Oh, and I always insist at least two Presidents of the US have worn his suits though I favour the Secret Service cut so the bulge under my armpit does not show (that is where I keep my wallet).

Although I'm from the USA, and prices are a bit different than your country, I found that getting 3 suits made in LOS as apposed to buying them in my home country, payed for my airfare, and hotel, with the savings.

Koolbreez...but you have to factor in the loss of tailoring jobs, garment industry layoffs, drop in textile profits, drop in tax dollars going to the public good, and many other damages that you do to your own home economy when buying foreign, and how your selfish attitude just for cheap suits is destroying the fabric (pun) of your local society.

Add it up!

There is not a lot of clothing still made in the USA these days. I certainly don't feel guilty about purchasing clothing made overseas, except for certain countries that obviously are not friendly to Americans.

I can't imagine where someone is buying their suits in the USA, so that the savings of buying them in the LOS would even pay for the airfare, much less anything else. There are a lot of discount stores that sell quality suits for $250 - $300. These are name brands that are typically manufacturing overruns or overstock items.

Since I rarely need to wear suits in my line of work, I recently decided to get rid the dozen or so in my closet. I even have 4 suits that I bought that are still new, never tailored, will the original tags on them. I will be lucky to get $125 for one of my new Ralph Lauren suits on Ebay.

I have several Polo University Club suits (46L) that are slightly used if anyone wants them for a steal (in USA only). I would sell the slightly used ones for $25 each.
