I'm not sure if this topic has been covered before but I think that a solid gold necklace (either 18k or 23k) of appx 31g weight (2 baht) and pendant to complement the set, would make a terrific gift to the palaya for giving birth to a baby girl. Is there a particular area (high street or shopping mall) in BKK where you would recommend going to find good quality jewellery at competitive prices and safe from scams?

You could try MBK plenty of Gold shops there take the Wifey best to let her pick? don't forget Gold for your daughter aswell!
or there's a good Gold shop in Pat Pong song near KFC (behind)
I always trade up every few years on the wedding ring,being pure it get's scratched & bent, they all have there own stamp on the said item underneath and give a better price if it's there work.

It's meant to be a surprise as she's temporarily staying upcountry with the family. So she'll have to trust my judgement and taste. Good point about some jewellery for the baby, I haven't thought about that. Thanks for your input guys, keep 'em coming.

Don't even think of 18 carat, 23 carat is the only thing to get. Even though the gold prices are the same everywhere, I find the handling charges at MBK to be the cheapest. The Chinatown area had the highest handling charges.
There's a smaller shop on the 3rd floor of MBK run by 2 older ladies that will treat you very fair if you tell them what it is for. Unfortunately I can find it with ease, but can't really describe how to find it........lol. It's the only shop run by 2 older ladies, and they are both always there. They have always given me a discount below prices I have been quoted from other shops. I've bought from them 3 different times.
If you could get a charm from your wife's temple, and have it mounted,and put on the chain, that would be real special.

True. Yaowarat is the most popular place to buy gold. Many TGs confirmed that the prices are higher than in other areas.

ya mate, I followed your advice and bought a 2 baht (30.5g weight) gold chain + pendant (3 baht in total weight) and a half baht bracelet for my daughter in Mah Boon Krong, MBK. The whole thing costed me 37K baht but everybody in the family was well impressed. I think it was a long term investment as gold never depreciates.

Hi. I had to resurrect this old thread because I can't start my own.
Slightly different question. I would love a good INTERNET source for purchasing say a 5 baht chain.
All the sites I have found are asking about 595 Usd/baht.
The international price is 443USD/baht. Someone is making WAY too much money on these deals. I can't find anyone reasonable.
Help, stuck in the States for a good while. Want to not get reamed on an internet necklace purchase.
BTW, how bad does US customs whack a 3k jewelry purchase?

The prices are higher on the internet, I assume, because of the style of the craftsmanship, which I guess most jewelry shops abroad don't carry. But maybe it really is to pay some import tax... I don't know much about it, so sorry, I don't have any advice. Maybe go into a Thai restaurant and ask them there. They got to have their gold.
