I was thinking about getting a pair of glasses during my next visit to BKK.  I saw a few stores, like off of Soi 3 that have some nice window dressings as well.  I was just wondering if the glasses there are good quality and decent to cheap prices ?  I don't need brand name ones.  Something $50 UD or less ?

maddogck1,

I think you'll find that the quality of the frame varies, the same as anywhere.  The lenses, depending on your prescription, and the coatings, etc. are MUCH cheaper than in the US, for example.

The shops around Sukhumvit are WAY overpriced, as you would expect.  The areas around the Ratchathewi BTS station, around to the east toward Panthip Plaza, as well as around the Phayathai station have MANY optical shops, and even if you don't speak Thai, you should be able to find much better prices.

As an example, last year, I bought 2 pair, including one progressive bifocal, for about 5800 baht (~$140).  The same glasses would have cost upwards of $450 in the US.

The shops on Sukhumvit bargain HARD, and rely on the cuties to soften you up.  The shop I used was right under the Ratchathewi BTS stairs, and run by an older woman.  Mild haggling, and a done deal.  She had good training, and all kinds of certificates on her wall, too.  I think it was called Nettaporn Optical...

hope this helps,
haam sup

maddogck1,

I go to MBK 2nd and 3rd levels. They can also test your eyes and the prices seem to start at 2000Baht (Frames and lenses) and go up to 4000, for the better frames (Emporio Armani stuff). My prescription in quite strong, so yours would presumably be cheaper again.

Also got an "Off the Shelf " set of contact lenses, very close to my prescription (say 19 : 19 vision) and good enough for what I needed to see, at the price of 2000Baht. Have now had them for a year and still OK.

It can pay not to see perfectly, in some of the P4P places!!!!!,at least not until the morning after.

Mr Alan
I checked prices on glasses all over town. You have to bargin hard at many stores if you are farang (and maybe if you are Thai, but I doubt it). But the best price I was offered without haggling was in Panthip Plaza on the left side of the building (don't remember which floor, but probably 1st or 2nd). Check prices at several stores and write them down on a log so that the sales people can see you are comparing prices. Also collect business cards from all the stores you visit and make them visable to the new stores you go into.

But it is hard to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples in the lens and the frame. Get a seperate quote on the frame and lens.

Best bet is to specify Hoya lenses for all price quotes so that you get an equal comparision. Obviously you also need to make sure you specify the same lens material (such as refraction index, coatings, etc) to compare prices properly.

Dids,

Not disposable, but as I said I got"off the shelf" ones for 2000Baht at MBK and they last a long time. Over a year now.

thanks for the advice guys.  I'll keep all of your advice in mind when I go shopping.  Is not an absolute must, but I would like to buy that backup pair of glasses.  If I can find a decent pair of glasses (frame and lens) with full exam for $50-75 range, I'll be a happy camper....

I am interested too and I've done some research:

- Silor High Index - Refractive Index 1.60
- Seiko High Index - Refractive Index 1.67
- Hoya High Index - Refractive Index 1.71

seem to be the best brands in increasing quality order.

It seems that as the Refractive Index gets higher, the lens get thinner.

Mr Alan
The higher the lens refractive index, the thinner (and usually lighter) the lens (for a given Rx), but the abbe value also goes down as the index increases. Abbe value is a measure of chromatic aberration, which is more noticeable as the lens Rx strength increases in either direction (either high plus or high minus). Because of this distortion, you should not go overboard on lens refractive index unless your lenses would otherwise be too thick and/or heavy.

Each of the brands you mentioned (Silor, Seiko, and Hoya) make several different lenses, of various refractive indexes. So, your comparison of brands is apples and oranges, and not comparing lenses of similar index offered by each brand. The lenses with a higher refractive index are not necessarily the best quality (for reasons discussed above).

This can be a complicated subject, and there is not a single lens that is best for all Rx's, all persons, and all frames.

Standard price for one day disposable contact lenses is about 1300Bt for 30 days. I have paid this price in both Emporium & lower Sukhumvit. I am sure they would be cheaper in less touristy areas but probably not worth the time & taxi fare.
