Mister Alan - I have inspected the entire cooking process - from the marinade (dry) - to the smoking - to the finished product - it nevers gets sauce till right before plating. It is EXACTLY as you describe.

Maybe you could do a little research before trashing the place. If the food doesn't suit you - by all means don't go back. The rest of us like it & would recommend the place.
I didn't trash the place. I said the ribs were very tender. I just said it is not Texas (or southern barbeque). Same could be said about every other place in BKK that serves ribs, and every barbeque place in the northern and western US. It ain't Texas barbeque (as claimed by the menu).

I still would like an explanation for the pitifully small side dishes.

I also said that the ribs at Outback Steakhouse were just as good (but also not Texas barbeque), maybe a bit better than GAR, and at a better location for me.

The vast majority of people on this forum have never tasted Texas (or southern) barbeque, and probably would not like it if they did. I had friend in the northern US try it one time and he said it was too smoky (duh).

Yes, I expected more than a thimbleful of potato salad...

Mmmm..well, I'm with Mr Alan in this particular debate. I took the tirac there last night, promising her some special ribs and I was very disappointed.

We had the hot wings to start and I ordered Atomic Blaster heat....if that was Atomic level, Hiroshima would still be standing today. Very mild, compared to those incredible fire wings you can order at Bourbon Street.

The fillet mignon chilli was ok. We also had a full slab of ribs. Look, i'm no expert on ribs and will defer to the Texans here, but I expect ribs to be melt in the mouth tender and smothered in juicy spicey sauce. These were dry and hard to eat.

Nice place though. Nice outdoor dining, but I was disappointed in the food.

I much prefer Bourbon Street. Haven't tried Tony Roma's yet, but they are always reliable in other parts of Asia.

nyc boy
nice to see some peeps finally checking out the ribs...

FYI Tony Romas and Hard Rock Ribs are boiled beforehand. Hence the particular different type of tenderness.

WRT the hot wings. atomic not too hot. Its a different type of hot. More of a vingear taste, which a lot southerners prefer. Its from Texas Pete sauce (not my preferred one) I prefer Louisana Crystal but that's how it is.

TEXAS. I am not so sure that Texans call themselves Southerners.

But I am sure I can call myself one.

Hailing from the Dirty South. ATL....

But lets not get into a heated debate on ribs. Its just food.... and each area of the world or state (and counties) have their own kind... I know for a fact that the ribs in Harlem (NYC) taste very similar to ones in Louisana...

enjoy...

tops for this place...

Wings...
Potato Skins...
Pulled Pork Sandwich (just like sloppy joes)
Beef Fajitas.. (SKIRT STEAK CUT)
Margaritas... (made by Wes himself)

Ribs... (great reheated the next day)

Sure, the BBQ is good, but the cost has just gone beyond all reason! These guys take a bite out of you every time you turn around. This is no longer a routine evening out for BBQ, but now reserved for special nights out. I spend more at Great American Rib than I spend at BBQ joints in Texas.

Dinner for two last night cost THB1,050! Soft drinks THB55; water THB40, PLUS THB15 for ice (which is automatically delivered and charged without choice - had I known, I would have told them I'll drink nothing).

I am no tight wad when it comes to dining, but come on - BBQ is friggin' peasant food, rendered from inexpensive, poor quality meat cuts (which should be real cheap here).

So, let me understand this: cheap meat, cheap labor, cheap location (across the street from a metal recycling yard), while the atmosphere is nice, it is definately not expensive to produce. Farang overhead must be a wee bit above scale.

Maybe taking BBQ to the level of "fashionable dining" is what they want, but this place is now no longer an impulse dining decision I make without even thinking, but reserved for special occasions only - value being the concern. "Gosh, maybe we'll go for a good steak tonight at Neil's Tavern... or, maybe upscale Italian at Antonio's Trattoria... or, maybe BBQ at Great American Rib Company?"

BKK is filled with good restaurants and THB1,050 will buy a lot of alternatives. Hope they will find a more reasonable balance of sale per cover and the number of covers served per day.

[... am I ranting here?... maybe in need of a steaming plate of phad thai to settle me?]

Agree on the pulled pork sandwich.

For a burger I prefer GT.

Thanks to the member that pointed out Charlie Browns for Mexican off Suk Soi 11, my next stop. For pizza Bamboo is hard to beat at the price.

Agree GAR hold themselves in very high esteem. From what I have seen they cater to (well heeled) Thai's. Good Luck.

When I had ribs there they were just like Mama used to make & I was born & raisied in Texas. LY & I both really liked them. If I had been served what Scobie got I would have sent it back. There are 3 Americans on site & thus no excuse for crap food, especially at these prices.

People in Texas don't eat ribs made by their mama. The eat at ribs (and BBQ) made at joints that hot smoke the meat for up to 12 hours (depending on which meat) in a big smoker that people at home don't have.

So I really wonder about that statement : "born & raised in Texas."
