I've been to this place two in the last six months. I soooo WANT to like it, but I can't. It's just terrible food and service.
Second time was last Monday, when I tried the mexican buffet. Bland food and served cold. I called over the waiter to complain and even before he got to me and I had a chance to open my mouth, he said 'food cold?'.
I mean. WTF? If he knew my complaint in advance, why bother serving it to me?
I won't be back.
I have to agree... as of late the food has gone down. Perhaps the new opening in Hua Hin has cost them.
I put the bland taste for not seasoning properly... salt and pepper... having worked 2 years in a French Rest. in nyc; everything needs seasoning of salt and pepper... salt being the first taste you "taste"
Recently ordered the Filet Mignon... no taste.. not even a beef taste had to add salt and pepper at the table
and yes the mexican is definetely missing some taste...
I put this down to the Thai cooks in the back and not Robb (chef) ; it was the same in nyc; the mexicans in the kitchen (although the restaurant backbone of most major cities) lack the fundamental cooking techniques of taste and understanding, they can 'copy' like hell; just like most thais can; but to understand what makes a good dish is beyond that... perhaps since nam plaa is so salty when they see a pile of dark powder and white powder (pepper and salt respectively) they do not know what it is for....

it might be down to the Thai cooks, but ultimately the chef is responsible for what is served out of the kitchen. And this stuff is overpriced garbage.
Real shame, because the atmosphere of the place is great. Even half-decent food would make it a regular haunt.

Rob is just one guy and, now that his partners are opening a place in Hua Hin, he's spread way too thin. Exactly the same thing happened at TR in Pattaya. When Rob was in the kitchen, it was the best American-style food in Thailand, probably in all of Asia. When he wasn't, the place was lousy. Great American Rib same same.

I can only underline the mixed reviews above.
I went there some weeks ago for a hamburger with fries and beans. I asked the waiter to cook the burger well done. Bad idea! The meat tasted dry as wood and I could only eat it with half a bottle ketchup. The bun was also definitely not the freshest one. The beans were not spicy at all but rather sweet which tastes weird for me.
For this quality served it is highly overprized and not worth to make it all the way. In addition, the boy waiter and the (cute) waitresses were talking the whole time about farang in my presence!
I really wonder why still so many patrons (a lot were highly overweighted  ) visit this restaurant!

You ordered Baked Beans... that's what they are... sweeten with brown sugar or cane syrup or molasses...
There are no spicy beans there... unless you went on a Monday Night for Mexican???

Haven't tried GAR, but must agree with OldAsiaHand's observations about Rob, who used to run a restaurant in the financial district of San Francisco. I'll have to try this new place in HH if I happen to get down there (soon).

Been where? Which one?
Soi 36 location is deceased... there's one in Pattaya (as of 3 weeks ago) but I have never visited and don't know if the ownership is the same.
Sounds like you need to be in HH as suggested by TideUp and phone ahead to be sure that Rob is cooking that night...
