It's part of the Asia culture and yes, as a manager of a main tour operator I can say that it's these kind of particular touches that make Thailand so interesting and unique...tourists don't come to Bangkok for the shopping malls or the international hotels....
That's exactly my point - for visitors and tourists, it is part of the particular charm that Bangkok exudes - sure, I can see the argument of some residents, but as previously pointed out, it applies more to the souvenir and kitsch vendors, than anything else...
Then again, who are we kidding - most likely, this is another ill-fated approach that will see a lot of movement and will eventually die a silent death. Besides, from what it seems, this seems to apply to Bangkok only, unless they intend to expand this to encompass all of Thailand (which would be pretty damn near impossible).
So, I think in conclusion, while it's interesting that such moves are being made, I think after all's said and done, nothing will have changed.

street vendors and 1/2 meter pavements are part of the unique charm of bangkok. I would miss them if they are gone.
the smells and sounds, the chili oil burning in your eyes making you cough.
also it's a good way to make money for them and the police.
stop being so american and singaporean about it.
and you know what?? they might be gone for a few days or even a week, but they will be back. eberybody needs a income...

The charm of steet vendors, especially to tourists, is undeniable. However, the question I feel, is one of striking a balance.
Even as a tourist, I doubt if one likes having street vendors in one's face wherever one goes.
Perhaps why they are setting up these zones.
City planners don't just cater to tourists, but to residents too.
Obviously the thai government are hanging out a little too much with their singaporean counterparts, so the copycat effect is quite evident.
But what's ironic is that while singapore is loosening up, thailand is doing just the opposite.

Forget for a minute, if the street vendors are an appealing cultural experience or not.
They are there not because they choose to.
They've come to Bangkok to seek their fortune because there are no jobs upcountry.
So they aint gonna leave in a hurry, thats for sure.
So it's not about fvcking them off because that would create a whole new set of problems.
It's about managing them better.

The most disruptive street vendors in town are those that pack Patpong every evening starting at 4pm. Why do I suspect they will not be impacted by this move to sanitize the vendors?

they actually are managed by the copper who is in charge of the pavement in question. so you think if they would be arranged in "designated areas" maybe with EU or DIN normed soupbowls and sterilised chopsticks, manuals.
"take 3 ounces of water, 34 grams of rice noodles. 4 beefballs with a diameter of 0.95 inches. heat up to 180 degrees and boil for 65 seconds..."

I used the word management in the macro sense of the word. In many countries there are actually designated spots for the street vendors to ply their trade, not just spring up willy-nilly (always wanted to use that word) till they effectively strangle the pavement to death.
Secondly, if thats how you like your noodles, then it's your choice.

All this is acedemic anyhow because Thais have no feeling of custodianship of public spaces. They're perfectly happy to live in filth and make it worse, so long as they can feel personally and self-righteously clean.
