I’ve been to the GAR a few times, and I was able to tell on my first trip there before even ordering that I need not get my hopes up too high.

They pass out the menus and make their recommendations, and I ask “do you have sweat tea?”. Waitress looks at me with eyes of bewilderment, goes to track down farang boss. Farang boss comes over to the table, and I ask again “do you have sweat tea?”. Farang boss looks at me with eyes of bewilderment, and says he has never heard of sweat tea.

WTF – a BBQ resturant called the Great AMERICAN Rib – that not only does not have sweat tea, but has never even heard of sweat tea?

What self-respecting BBQ establishment in all of the South-Western US does not have sweat-tea on the menu? NONE.

What is sweat tea you ask? Well just as the name implies it is ice tea that is extra (and I mean extra) sweat. Not just plain old ice tea with a lot of extra sugar added later. But tea brewed sweat from the start.

It ain’t proper BBQ with out sweat tea to wash it all down.

So as you can see I am no big fan of GAR BBQ. The story ain’t all bad. The pulled pork is prerrty good, and the Mexican is pretty good for Mexican food in this hemisphere.

My TG likes the BBQ – but then again she is Thai, and what do they know about BBQ?

IB,
I thought the tea must be what you drink when you are perspiring or after working up a sweat

IBFarang I guess you never heard of Thai Tea. They bring a side cup of sugar syrup that you pour into your tea. Nothing sweeter, execept maybe the server who brought it to you. Anyhow great idea since it is always hard to try to get regular sugar to fully disolve in cold tea. The super saturated sugar syrup is the way to go.

The JW Marriott also make their ice cubes out of ice tea for your ice tea so it will not dillute your tea when they melt like ordinary water would.

I just sweat tea would be made from taking the sweat out of your shit kicker's hat while BBQing them ribs and pouring it into your tea

Most self-respecting establishment would also know how to properly serve, and spell, it -- so, if you were asking for sweat tea, I'm not surprised that you would not receive any sweet tea.

Unless ordered otherwise, ALL iced tea in Thailand served to you is sweet by default (and since I dislike sweet drinks, it sometimes takes several tries to get me some unsweetened tea).

IB - you have set your standards far too high. bring them down a few levels... and don't sweet the small stuff.

"and the Mexican is pretty good for Mexican food in this hemisphere."

Ok so you're a sweet/sweat tea expert but clearly have no idea about geography. What "hemisphere" do you think we/you are in?

OK so my spelling sucks.

This does not improve their BBQ.

By the way DaffyDuck – the tea that is served as standard iced tea in Thailand in nowhere near as sweet as what I consider real sweet tea. And IMHO adding the sugar – even the liquefied versions does not give you the same result.

In regard to hemisphere – I was referring to the Eastern Hemisphere.

"I was referring to the Eastern Hemisphere."

Must be an American or "New World" thing...

Since I'm unfamiliar with the kind of beverage you seem to covet, could you maybe propvide some references for venues (locales, countries, cities, stores) that do provide this highly-valued 'sweet tea'.

It's certainly not an American beverage, or a European one...
