From what I read the water should be avoided for drinking and also ice. Can you get the bottle water that can be consumed safely at most 7/11's restaurants, hotels ect? Do they come with the cap on unbroken there? Can you get bottle water at the go-go's bars ect? I know someone is going to say, “Dude just drink the beer and don't worry!” I will do my share of it but I like water. Also what about places that rinse with water on veggies? Any places to stay away from any problem with salads again I like them too any vegetarians out there? Recommend any safe ideas on eating in Thailand? (Don’t want to ruin my fist trip to Thailand with food poisoning) Thank you for your help in this concern

ramster,

Good bottled water can be found everywhere.

I have never had any serious problems (a little stomach grumbling which was probably due to the booze and not the food) with lettuce, vegetables or any other food. If you are in doubt about where to eat, go with the crowds. If it smells really bad, don't eat it. If it looks like a spider on a stick, don't eat it. Bring immodium in case. There are many threads on the form about the numerous great restaurants in Bangkok. Go easy on the first couple of days to let your system adjust and then go crazy, the food is great.

if you ask for a bottle of water in a gogo bar your likely to get on your head !!!!!

try the lonley planet website its full of tricks on how to smuggle your own drinks into a bar

better still bring your own water with you

but if they catch you at the airport it 25 years hard labour

but if your are going to smuggle water bring the de-hydrated type

by the sound of it the information you are reading is sh_te

bangkok is a modern city with all that comes with it that includes water that you can drink !!!!!

I drink tap water....no problem....

Your information is flawed.

This doesn't always apply outside Bangkok.

Yes, you can get cheap bottled water with the factory-sealed cap at any convenience store or restaurant. Many times the waiter will open the bottle for you, but don't be alarmed. Just order bottled water, with no ice. You can order bottled water at a MP. Not sure about a go-go bar, but I assume that you can.

I don't really know much about the danger from uncooked vegetables like lettuce. Not too many places serve lettuce (Western type salads are not common).

I never drank tap water and usually asked for no ice, but ate some uncooked veggies that I assume was washed with tap water. But I never got food sickness in any of my stays in Bangkok.

If you do get sick, go to a pharmacy and you can get anti-biotics very cheap. Just tell the pharmacist your problem and they will help you.

Ramster,

Can always order tonic water in gogos,
sonds like "naam toe-neek".

I also drink BKK tap water without ill effect.

I always bring Imodium but have never had to use it.

The travel guides are written very conservatively,
and sometimes the advice is the purest bullsh_t.

Relax, have fun, drink all the freakin' water you want.

In BKK, don't sweat the ice. Have that cocktail "over" and don't worry.

The water is safe enough, whether used as ice or to wash vegetables or dishes; after at least 10,000 exposures I've had stomach problems exactly twice. Granted, I may have built up a tolerance -- a tourist might have a different experience after slamming back tumblerfuls of tap water.

You're more likely to have respiratory problems from the dirty Bangkok air than stomach problems from the water anyhow.

Just keep your mouth closed in the shower. You wouldn't believe the nasties that grow in the pipes and hot water tanks...

if you have a sensitive stomach

the ice cubes with the holes are supposed to be safe. brought in by the wholesellers and monitired by the ministry of health.

otherwise stick to bottled beers.

I brush my teeth with tab water. I occasionally drink tab water.

never had a problem in 14 years.

gogos have water available. polaris in glass bottles or the ones in the PET bottles.

If you are staying under two weeks, just have your doctor prescribe you some broadband anti-biotics (CiPro will do the trick), and take two each day.

I did the two times I went to BKK, Pattaya and UdonThani, and never had any trouble eating or digesting any food or drink. Didn't worry about the icecubes, didn't worry about the vendor food. Had no issues at all.

Just make sure you use extra strong SPF on your sunblock, as the anti-biotics will increase your reaction to sunlight.

I go against the comments here, I don't drink the Bangkok tap water, I have been sick a few times on my many visits (some I admit to being more to do with the stuff out of little brown bottles!). As I travel allot I always carry Imodium. Be safe, not sorry.

I have friend who on his first trip to BK drank the tap water from a 5 star hotel for 3 days, no problems, however on the plane on the way back to Sydney he spent most of the flight in the loo, then 3 days in a Sydney Hospital on a drip!!! You can be lucky or unlucky, why take the chance! Drink bottled water!
