I tried using "Search" with the member's name in the text field and then selecting both posted in as well as started by but only ended up with 3 posts shown where the member actually had 11.
Sometimes, the member gets involved in a deleted discussion, and I have no way of tracking those numbers (of posts).

BK - That's what I had come to realize. I didn't know how the script worked for that but now that I think about it, yetch, implementing the post counter to count actual posts would not be fun!
So, if the search by author, posted in, started by and both, does show all of the non-deleted posts, then I would guess this thread can be closed. However, if you close it and either Smeg, Haam or Mr. J object, I would not be opposed to reopening it.

?? ÝI am really lost. What is this thing about closing this thread? And why do we (those who have posted) have any special saying on it? Maybe someone who hasn't posted yet would like it to be open for later if he/she so then at any later date decides to add something. Or what about the guy who hasn't joined the forum but will do so later today and may want to say something here.
At the end, sidetracking from my own views on the matter, I think that if ANY of this was to be implemented the "last 30 days" posts of haam sup may be of more interest than the "last 25 posts" of haam sup. Why? Because different people post with different frequency. ÝAnd the last 25 or 50 or whatever for one person may show too much of a concentration on few subjects, if that person is a prolific poster, thus giving BAR very little to cross-reference on style. Whereas less posts over a longer period may tell you more -which is what BAR wants at the end.
BAR, take into account that if one person -like we have done here ourselves, posts a lot in one thread, when you do a search, it will show you many less threads than what you may expect.

My point for closing it was that I felt the reason for starting the thread was no longer an issue. "I want this." "You already have that." "OK, I'm done."
Why did I offer you and the other posters in the thread the option of objecting? Because I'm a nice guy.  Oh, you don't believe that one.  OK, I'll try to come up with another one. ;)
In the past, initiators of threads have asked that they be closed and BK closed them. I just wanted to give the guys who had taken an interest in the thread their say in the matter.

Damn good idea! Not only are your reasons excellent but something else I just thought of as well.
The current "Search" function doesn't give the ability to limit the results regarding date or number of posts. Example, I do a search on "Orbit" or "Condom", or whatever but I don't want to have to wade through posts that may be years old or I don't want pages and pages of posts to search through.
I like your idea!!!!

I had thought of that and in the case that motivated me to start this thread, "NewGuy", I had searched and re-read all of the posts in the 3 threads that came up but what I didn't know was that the majority of them had met with BK's deadly "del" key and wiped into digital oblivian, thank God!!!

I think that to make sense I will have to start in reverse order -vis a vis the para. that I quoted.
First of all, I wasnt aware that whoever started a thread had the prerogative of asking BK to close the thread and BK acting on that request. I thought it was BK's right alone and that he exercised it as he saw fit (to which I have no objection).
Now, I think that if ABC was to ask to get the Orbit thread closed and BK followed suit, many many other people would be pissed.
My initial intention as I was reading your post was to say that you could not offer us the option of obejcting, because it was not up to you do decide on the closing of the thread. Thus how to offer what you do not control? ÝHowever, if what you say is true on the closing of threads at the request of the initiator, then I object to all and any such closings.
In my opinion, the only one with the right to decide on thread closing is BK -I may disagree with him at some point, but he has the right to do as he wishes with the forum. But if it is policy to close if the starter so requests.... then as I said.... ABC, PLEASE DON'T EVEN DREAM ABOUT IT!!!
As I said, I was not clear in stating any objection, because I thought there was no need to do so. However, I think that now my answer is obvious from the above

Getting back to what you were talking about with the "last 30 days", what do you think about modifying the search to add a date limit?
I can do without the count limit, although having that could help to reduce server load and increase response times, but being able to filter posts by date would be good. I've seen some boards where one can bracket dates but I think "the last X days" would be sufficient. If it's anything more than days, doing a full search wouldn't be that much less efficient.

I agree ...maybe a few options ... like 2 days, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, and ...since the "big-bang"?
Anything that might be done, either way would reduce server load -if compared to the existing option.
I think I should stress that in no way, this exchange means I (I am even am willing to venture any of the other fellow posters) am asking for these changes to be implemented. BK is doing all us a favor, and we are all grateful for it. I see this just as an academic discussion on the issue. If any of the additions discussed are implemented great, if not ... great too!
