Are you serious? Have you ventured outside, at all? There's a plethora of salons offering mani/pedicure right outside, or up and down Sukhumwit.

Workmanship is just as in the US - it varies from girl to girl.

Is it safe? Well, so far I have survived several of them. YMMV.

I have never gotten a shave, manicure, or pedicure at a salon in Thailand. I want to though as I think it would be a nice prelude to a relaxing oil massage. But, I too, have also wondered about the safety of this as far as properly sterlizing everything between customers. I guess you could ask to try and be on the safe side.

Be warned: when leaving your hotel room you may encounter other people *physically* !!!

Boy oh boy, you get in touch with the girls with much more sensitive tools than your fingers and toes, right? Do you ask them for sterlizing their tools?

I knew someone would come up with this response. Come on man. Sure I get my groove on, but that's what a condom is for. However, I don't have my em scrape and rip off dead skin, which often have nicks on em with sharp objects. And no, I don't stick my fingers and toes up their ass.

Interesting.

You get some odd manicures and pedicures. I have never been cut or bled from any manicures/pedicures I received - Thailand or otherwise.

Again, YMMV, just as in the rest of the world.

Daggy,

I think the basic idea of tis thread is perfectly wrong and a typical health misunderstanding. None of these tools will ever be sterlized.

The only place with decent sterlizing (if you're lucky and most of the time) is a hospital's operating room and it's tools. Evething else is *septic* even your own personal no-one-else-ever-uses-it-razor at home, eveything else is wishful thinking...

All I'm saying is for those who work with their hands, or bite their nails, etc... often have little cuts near the cuticles. During a manicure they will often remove the dead skin or push it back with their tools (as you know because you've had manicures/pedicures) . If you go from one person to another using the same tools couldn't their be a possiblity to contaminate someone else if those tools were not properly cleaned. Now please, don't give me "isn't their a possiblity that yadayadayada... " Sure, odds are chances of transmitting anything are remote, but why not the question - are the tools sterilized in the salons of Thailand? Maybe not a health misunderstanding, but rather someone asking an inquisitive question?

http://www.capecodonline.com/cctimes/health/nails18.htm

http://womenshealth.about.com/od/commonhealthissues/a/manicuretips.htm

These are just the first few I saw off google as I'm sure there are countless others.

Here is what another website had to say:

http://www.beautytech.info/articles/consumer_calif.htm

- An operator should never use the same tools on you that were just used on someone else without first disinfecting them. If an item cannot be disinfected (such as a nail buffer block or an emery board), it must be thrown away immediately after use. If a clean set of tools is not available for use on you, do not allow the operator to perform the service. Improper disinfection of tools and implements can spread disease and bacteria from one person to another. A prime example would be the spread of nail fungus during a manicure or pedicure. (NOTE: You have every right to ask the operator to explain the disinfection procedures before a service begins. Various viruses can be transmitted through the use of dirty instruments, including HIV and Hepatitis B.

-----------------

So again, why not ask the question - do they sterilze the tools in the salons of Thailand? Oh well, I guess they only do that in their operating rooms?

Dagul, no pun intended, I agree to a certain extend that you have a point here, it's just beyond my concern... Peace bro!

But the hysterical story in that first link is really hilarious. It looks to me like a cheap salesman tale although true and I have never seen the "Prestige 210006 Classic Sterilizer" in any parlor all over the world...

That doesn't mean that you don't find a judge in God's own county who is even more stupid than the salesman's tale and makes such a woman a millionaire in an instant...

Doctors say such herpes virus is first of all transmitted through skin-to-skin contact when there is a skin break.

So how do you first of all sterilize all the hands you shake throughout your average working day, before you start to sterilize tools?

I actually wanted to remove that first link, but you beat me with a comment so I'll leave it up there. It was a little cheezy. But the other links make a person think about it. Getting into the whole handshake thing is a little over the top. I'm no "Bob" in the movie What about Bob, who needs a hand rag to open a door or talk on the telephone. I was just defending a simple question, that I too had been thinking about, that was posed by the original poster.

And no worries... peace
