I just wanted to get information if restaurants were not serving chicken or cooking them longer and if hotels were not serving eggs as part of their buffet breakfast. The Manhattan to be more specific. Therefore, I would know my food options when I get there. If others wanted to talk about other topics in it, thats good. I'm not scared by the idea of eating eggs or chicken and will probably do so when I get there. Thanks for some of the good information.

There is a damn site more to the thai menu than just chicken and eggs. Are you one of these weird people with a chicken fetish and thats all you wanna put in your mouth in a non perverse way that is. Before you get on your flight, pop down to your nearest supermarket and pick up a couple of kilos of frozen chicken breast, by the time you reach LOS, it should be nicely defrosted and you can take it to any resteurant of your choosing and ask them to cook a flu free peice of chicken. Enjoy your meal.

I'm not sure what the purpose of that response was. Read my response above and it will answer your questions. If anyone is pushing a chicken fettish, you seem to know more about it than I do. I started this thread to talk about serving chicken in restaurants and thats all.

I don't have any opinions about "eggs/chicken" but I've read some threads and replies in the Nebies section recently. I thought the whole purpose of having a Newbie Section was to allow Newbies ask, well, Newbies questions. Regardless of the questions being that good or bad, I think everyone should give the newbies a little slake. At least it's not one of those "where is Eden, where can I find Russian girls, or where is the best go go bar..." question. If the topic don't pretend to you, just skip it and don't reply. Especially in the Newbies section.

Yes they are serving it in restaurants but demand for it has plummeted rather drastically. If anything, this might affect the freshness factor of the food. Since they aren't selling much of it, I don't think they are getting fresh stocks as regularly as before. But if it is cooked well, it should be alright. Go fearlessly into the land of chickens.

Mick-TK, I failed to read your question addressed to me in your earlier post.

Yes, you are right. BTW, I had a tom kha khai soup last night.

One other thing, remember that few infectious diseases can be caught by ingestion of contaminated food. Gastric juices in the stomach would kill most viruses and harmful bacteria. Inhalation through the lungs, contact with a mucous membranes like the eyes or direct contact with blood is more likely. Some viral infections diseases that can be caught by getting the transmitting agent into your digestive system get caught at the first point of contact, the mouth and that is more likely if you have gum disease. Of course, there are some very nasty things that can be caught by ingestion of contaminated food, but they are few: cholera, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Typhoid fever, E coli infection.

Breathing bad stuff is more dangerous than eating bad stuff. Evolution of our defense mechanisms made the digestive track better equipped to fight potential risks than the respiratory track. In the past our cave ancestors were more likely to eat something bad than to come accross polluted air.

Inhalation is generally a low risk. Contact with someone else's infected fluids (mucus especially) and then rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth is how most virii are spread.

Wash your hands after putting them where other people put their hands. Keep them away from your face.

You have to see it to believe it. Sometimes you wonder where they get these guys from.

============================================================
As reported today:

THAILAND has threatened to impose trade sanctions on any country that refuses to accept its chicken.

Just a day after the European Commission complained of Thailand’s "disgraceful behaviour" in its cover-up of bird flu, the Thai commerce minister said he would retaliate against countries which would not accept Thai chicken.

"Thailand has done everything to everything to ensure that Thai chicken is safe," said Watana Muangsook.

"If the importing countries do not reopen their markets Thailand will raise some retaliatory measures on their products.

"Thailand will soon have to ask our counterparts to sterilise their Toyotas and perfume before they are shipped to Thailand," (a very mature thing to say!!) he said in a direct reference to bans imposed on Thai chicken by Japan and the European Union.

Mr Watana’s comments, which come after a four-year-old boy became Thailand’s sixth fatality from bird flu, were seen in Bangkok as more little more than another outrageous statement by a Thai government official.

His comments come four days after the Thai ambassador to Brussels, Surapong Posayanond, was summonsed to the European Commission to listen to a protest by Martin Power, the assistant to David Byrne, the European Commissioner for health and consumer protection.

Mr Surapong said he was told: "It was disgraceful that the Thai government misinformed the Commissioner, who directly oversees health and consumer protection.

"The Commissioner has lost his long-held confidence in the Thai government."

Mr Byrne made a public announcement in Thailand during a visit in January that the country was free of bird flu and that he was confident of the Thai government’s actions and assurances.

Three days later he had to eat his words as the Thai government admitted the truth.

It has since been shown that they had covered the matter up since November.

Thailand’s agricultural minister, Somsak Thepsuthin’s, claimed it was not the Thai government’s intention to cover up the outbreak but officials had just not been able to confirm it. (sure sure sure! keep on dreaming the west will buy this)

Here's what I don't get about 'saving face'.

Let's face it (!), it's clear that behavior such as outlined above (not just lying about it, but them making a western ally lose face, by admitting it and making him eat crow; making insulting and plain stupid statements about sterilizing toyotas) clearly makes Thailand as a country, and as a culture lose face to the west (because the lies and statements are so transparent), but also clearly makes those making the statements lose face.

I understand that the concept of 'face' is very convoluted, and only really applies to the immediate moment, instead of looking long-term -- but my question really is: "Are they really that dumb?" I mean, it doesn't take rocket science to evaluate a situation, and figure out possible consequences -- or are we westerners just simply better in covering our asses, and 'saving face', than those who are more overtly concerned about it (but suck practically).
