Mr. Alan,

I totally agree. I am a little research freak about everything, and I have located extensive information on the various antibiotics and their uses. The internet is a great source of reliable information if you go to the right sites. From my research, Cipro is only used for Gonorrhea, but NOT for non-gonnocal urethritis, which is what the clinic said I have. However, the only drugs recommended for NGU (to my knowledge) are Zithromax, Doxycyclin, and Erithromycin (tetracycline group). The doctor also prescribed Flagyl, in case I had Trich, but that did not work either.

So, I am really at a loss of what to try next, and the doctor is too. Perhaps the doctor in LOS will be more knowledgeable of local strains that the US might not be aware of. Perhaps a larger dose of Zithro or Doxy would do the trick, but I don't want to do that without consulting a doctor first. Hmmm...

confused and concerned,
osten

Mr Alan
There is a drug called Raxar or Vaxar (grepafloxacin) that can be used to treat non-gonnocal urethritis. But it is no longer available in the US, due to cardiovascular problems that have occured in some rare cases.

Am I right to suspect that you are considering automedication based on advice from a public forum and due to some current frustration with the previous results? Great! Good luck.

No, that is not correct at all. As mentioned in my previous posts, I only have taken what doctors have prescribed, but it seems to be helpful if I have actually suggested drugs to the doctor here, as he does not seem to have experience with resistant NGU from Thailand. I don't intend to take anything without doctor advice. I don't want to create more antibiotic resistant strains by self medicating!

Mr Alan
My advice was to research information on various drugs and read the directions carefully. I was not prescribing drugs to anyone.

However, my experience is that doctors are basically lazy, or overworked, or underpaid (your choice). They don't always have time to thoroughly research information and they tend to operate on the 80-20 rule. They treat people based on what their "usual" experience is for the 80% of patients.

People who have rare or even unusual conditions will often get screwed by the medical system, even in the USA, which probably has the best overall medical care in the world.

Persistence and doing some of research on one’s own is advised. Another possibility in this particular case is the diagnosis is incorrect, which obviously causes the wrong treatment to be prescribed. I have personally had several tests that yielded erroneous results. I am not saying that this is the case here, but it could be, and should not be ruled out.

To be practical* (but ask you docter first!) and just want to get rid of the NSU another 10 days of Zithromax could solve the problem. But consider Metronidazole 1 single dose (2gram). *It's only 1 day medication. But again (as read earlier: don't use a board like this for medical help.... ) ask your docter, really... it's a profession. So ask the professional. You have to study a long time to become a docter and still don't know everything.

After starting this thread nearly a year ago, I still have been unable to get rid of the resistant NGU that I picked up.

I have been to several clinics, both in Thailand and USA, and no doctor has been able to prescribe the right combination to knock it out. I've tried just about every antibiotic that is used for STDs and to no avail.

If anyone else had this same problem, but found a cure, I sure would love to hear it. I am not into self-prescribing, but it would be good to suggest another possible idea to my doctor if someone had a similar problem but solved it. Okay to private message me if you prefer.

Frustrated, but not regretful,

Osten,

Have the clinics actually done tests to know the exact DNA profile of this strain and maybe then use the right antibiotic ?
I am not a specialist but I assume that your strain has a generic profile of Chlamydia but one gene has mutated to resist against antibiotics ?

Are the bacteria going to remain for life or die by themselves sometimes ? Does this mean infertility ?

Just knowing that this strain is out there in BKK makes me shiver thinking about all the BBBJ I had there in the past...
