There is a real danger of contracting HIV in Thailand.
Many ladies working the bar scene are HIV positive.
Freelancers are usually the most dangerous.You can see sometimes very beautifull young freelancers outside Nana Hotel or on the beach in Pattaya. Wonder why they dont work in the safer environment of a bar ?On the other hand the fact that a girl works in a bar, be that a big go-go, beer bar or whatever does not preclude anything.The alleged monthly blood tests are a big scam as are usually done in private clinics and can easily give negative HIV results if they get the right fee.I am aware of quite a lot of HIV positive BGs working with no problem,long time after they were tested positive ( by myself). I have tested meny "girlfriends" myself and although I take ladies usually from big establishments the going rate of HIV was about 15 %. The situation is definitely worse in Pattaya.
I will give you the following PROFESSIONAL ADVICE :
HIV CAN be transmitted by saliva but is a lot more difficult than contarcting it by sex.So wet kisses and unprotected oral sex is NOT completely safe ( lot worse if the BG has got some oral sore/ wound, usually invisible to the unawary customer).Avoid them with high risk women
Always use 2 condoms. Always use lubricating jelly ( KY or Durogel) as condoms break easily in dry pussies especially if foreplay is short, you got a big dick or the girl is really tight.Never use any other lubricant ( e.g. vaseline, baby oil etc) as these are known to cause condom disruption.Make clear to the girl not to put any thing in her vagina to make it slippery while she's locked in the shower room before sex.
Anal sex is more dangerous due to the usually "tighter" conditions
If you are going to stay with a bargirl longer than 2 days always have her tested for HIV. It's quick (results in 30 minutes), readily available ( Pattaya Int'l Hospital, Bangkok Christian Hospital on Silom near Patpong, Bumrungrad Hospital near Nana) and costs 500-800 baht. If the girl is not willing ( no need I have test every month, I afraid needles and bullshit like that ) run away.If you get her tested,always do it large hospitals. Dont do it at Private clinics (especially if the girl brings you there ) as they can give easily negative results (saves time and money for them to run the test or they may have been bribed by the girl before.

Yes, I would consider the results of a single 30 minute test to be a little suspect. The usual fast-track test is roughly 3-days like LH said and more accurate tests take even longer. Maybe things have progressed to the point that 30 minutes is enough. Hopefully somebody else can confirm or deny this.

Yes I am a western doctor and I come for sex in Thailand for the last 20 years.I have studied extensively the subject and apart from my scientific knowledge I have ample experience involving sexual practices with bargirls (have been with about 1000 BGs myself).
1) yes quick tests are now very reliable if are performed in a reputable institution.The test costs money (its the cost of the reagents used and the time spent to do it) and some small clinics may just give you a negative result to save money,time,or if they are out of reagents especially if you are a foreigner and you can contract AIDS at any other point in the future.
If positive, it proves only that the person has come in contact with the HIV virus and has developed antibodies to it.In the vast majorities of cases that means the person IS infected ( called a carrier untill he/she develops the disease-AIDS ) and can transmit the virus to you.Almost all of the carriers progress to the disease within 10 years and most of them die.A small percentage remain the carrier state for longer intervals (15+ years) for yet unknown reasons but there is no guarantee you will fit in that category if you get the virus.
2) re: SALIVA.Yes pure saliva contains very little numbers of HIV particles and the risk is very small.
But a person with bad oral hygiene, mouth ulcers,gingivitis (gum infection) etc -conditions very common in bargirls in Thailand-can shed significant amount of white blood cells in the mouth and all these get mixed with the saliva.This increases the risk significantly, although it still remains low compared with unprotected sex.Obviously it is impractical to test a girl's mouth before kissing, but these are the hard facts.
3) Mosquitoes can probably transmitt the virus as well if in the short interval before they bite they have bitten some HIV carrier.
The medical community has kept this in small print to avoid panic in the general public (eg in restaurants with substandard hygienic conditions, public toilets etc)
I am not trying to scare you off at all, as myself I am continuing to use the available sexual services.
Carry on doing what you do, but bear in mind this very real problem as you may find yourself in a very nasty nightmare candition.Engaging in sex with prostitutes in Thailand (and any other place on earth) is not something to be done in a complete happy-go-lucky attitude.Take care and act sensibly.If that takes away the magic of the moment and you want to act carelessly...well, its your funeral
