I have lived in Isaan for over two years and have yet to see a donkie (sic). Most of the farmers use either tractors or buffaloes.

If this little snippet is directed at me, please read my post again and show me where I even mentioned my living arrangements.
Perhaps I am living with three monkeys and a midget. That doesn't alter the fact I have never seen a donkie (sic) and happen to know how rice is gathered.

Sorry expatchuck, you've lost me there.
I don't think there was any connection aimed at you.
After I understood that our 'arry444 was standing beside an old lady in a hat ( whether she was wearing the hat or he was, is immaterial ) and she was picking rice, presumably out of her teeth, I got lost.
I think it was because the vision provided didn't make it clear whether the old lady was in the middle of a field or seated in the centre of Nana.

I don't think you did.
But then, having read it, maybe you assumed my remarks generally reflected my attitude to Thais and Thailand.
So I must say that although there are many good aspects about a lot of other countries in the world, having continually lived here for many, many years and witnessed both city and rural life, there isn't another country I would rather be living in.
Yes, we can all list the negatives, and they are very real, most of all to the Thais themselves.
And although their religion is, in comparison to others,refreshing in so far as it goes, I do think that it is part of the burden they carry.
But there are so many other things about these people and their culture that is so appealing, ever though they are handicapped by avoiding instances of confrontation and their need to resign themselves to a perceived 'Fate' as only their justified and due karma, I have found the milk of human kindness and the salt of the earth qualities of human nature in these deprived conditions and denied circumstances that elsewhere lay buried deeper beneath the veneer of so-called civilization.

What troubled me in your original posting was that you actually said that the good, honest Thais are the minority.
And I mean that they are not only the majority - well the honesty aspect might be disputed - but also constitute what I would call the "soul" of the country.
Never mind, we both seem to love Thailand. And there must be some good reasons for it.
Or to quote the piece of advise from the famous French chef who had left a high profile job at home for living here instead:
"Stay (in Thailand). Never leave".

we lub thailand NOT becoz of its poor, loving, caring, honest, church going thais! its "soul" as some say................lol.
we lub it becoz of its non -stop party atmosphere.
im certainly not spending over 1100$ in airfare tomorrow to spend time in REAL thailand with REAL thai peeple!

Well Dopey.... living in Thailand you have to put up with the good and the bad.... and the bad, as true in most countries, is more powerful than the good.
It is Pollyanna to think that because the majority is good the place is all sunshine and lollies.... hell the majority of Afghans and Iraqis are good people but I would not live there either.
And on another point do not be so quick to put down Singapore. As a resident for over 8 years I can assure you that it's lifestyle is far and above better than Thailand except where in the case in that you are totally incapable of getting a GF unless you pay for them.
The stereotypes that the casual traveler and armchair pundits keep trying to promote are just that, stereotypes.... errr, except for you Cheap Charlie, you can not smoke your ganga here so you'd better stay in LOS
