OK I wanted to see what the bros think is the best value hotel in BKK. But since this is highly subjective, and since a few may want different things out of a hotel, I think it should at least be clasified with a cost per day. I do mean short stays, since you can get very good value for appartments if you rent one for several months/a year of course (10,000 bhat per month will get you a very nice 1 bed 1 bath appartment, you can go as low as 5,000 bhat per month plus utilities - be careful of those, especially telephone charges. But this is a different topic).

So here is my short list (all guest friendly of course, may need to book double though) :

Up to 1,000 bhat/day: Hotel Manhatten (832B single)
Up to 1,500 bhat/day: Majestic Suites, Regency Park (1072B single)
up to 2000 bhat/day: Grand President (1532B single), Royal President (1722B single)
up to 2500 bhat/day: Majestic Grand (2440B double)
3000 bhat/day and above: Lendmark (3200B double), Westin Grand (4700B double).

All prices are incl of breakfast and taxes and any commisions, and were obtained at the post date from http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/bangkok.html
Tip: display the prices in Thai Bhat, you will get a better conversion rate than using US$. A nice site comparing prices from different travel web sites is: http://hotelreslist.com/thailand/bangkok/name.twinPrice.THB.html

Will be interesting to see your short list of places which offer best value. Best value means, given what you get at that hotel its the best that you like (incl best location, best pool, best breakfast, whatever you consider to be best for you for the price paid, vs. other similar hotels with similar services/features).

Cheers,

Apollo

Excellent choice.
Manhattan wins with some distinction. Not the best hotel but value for money it can't be bettered,at least if you can avoid the construction noise next door.It is however incredibly popular so you may need to book well in advance.
Grand Majestic is a more superior hotel in many respects and again very popular but given the price differential not in the same league.
Landmark is maybe 10/15 years older than the Grand Majestic and stylish in different ways from the GM but not as good value for money.
The other hotels I have not tried.

Other hotels I would suggest are the Grand Business Inn on Soi 11 (and ignore the negative posts by some idiots regarding this hotel). It is excellent value if you can still get it for 1200 for a double.
Would also suggest you try the hotels in 11/1.Some years since I have tried them but the President Inn and Bangkok Inn although very basic were suffient for my needs, comfortable, extremely cheap and GF.

There is more than one answer for best VALUE. Those who work very hard all year long, looking forward for their 2 or 3 weeks vacation, and can afford to pay 1000 bhat more a day, may opt for a nicer hotel, while others, living on a fixed income, may want to save their money and get a basic room to sleep in. That is why I have started this thread, listing different levels of hotels at different prices. Location could be very important to some, but less to others. Breakfast may not be an issue to those late sleepers, but to some, they may like to have their main meal of the day at the breakfast buffet (you will be suprized, since the night is time for the action not to waste it on dinner... . If you can afford it, go for the Westin. Its the best value for its class (all being GF of course, which means the Oriental is not a best value...). Sheraton Grand is very good too, but I wont call it best value simply because it is more expensive than the Westin. JW used to be very good, but went down IMO, yet if you consider frequent guests program, there are those who will stay at the Conard, just because of their HHonors membership...!

So this is again my short list. Where do you want to stay? Depends how much you want and can pay. Lendmark is very fine hotel (suggest you try their burger.. better than anything you ever had... yes better than that Thai guy in front of Nana is doing but hey its subjective you know we are talking about taste here).

Manhattan is noisy? Get to be a regular there, make friends with front desk manager, get his business card, and write him an email before your stay (or even call him, but first make sure you get to know him...), and you will get one of the best rooms in the house... again, its all about your ability to interact with people. You can be nice and joke and kind, and find you get a double bed room, no noise, and still pay 800bhat per day. Now that is a deal.

Cheers.

Shredded Wheat
For me the best value recently was a stay of a few days at the Intercontinental Hotel at the end of April. The price quoted when the booking was made was US$140 per night for a double wih 2 breakfasts. That was for Mrs Shreddie and I. On checkout, the price billed was in THB and I think was about THB5800 per night. The Hotel is very nice & clean - all you would expect of a first class place really - and the rooms are spacious. Small rooftop pool - gave me vertigo when I looked over the edge, so I stopped doing that; health spa is on the floor just below the pool, although I did not have time to try out their massages. Very attractive lady on the reception desk at the spa - do not know if she gives massages but she set my mind racing. They had oily and traditional on the menu, also in room service although I did not try. The hotel seems well located also - there is a sky train station right outside. The hotel food and service was first class also - as you would expect.

The reason it was such good value for me is that I was on business and my employer re-imbursed my expenses (so it was a freebie - but I had to work while I was there so no time to enjoy the facilities fully). However, while staying there my wife and I signed up for their priority club rewards program and it seems there is money off and room upgrades available on our next visit. I am tempted to splash out and treat Mrs Shreddie to a couple of nights there next time we are in LOS. Although it will still cost considerably more than I would normally pay I am sure we will enjoy it more as we would both have time to make full use of the facilities.

Reading some of the posts on the massage threads it seems well located for many of the oily places. Did not get the chance to try those out in April as I was working; would like to correct that next time.

Akane is very near the Inter Continental. Passed by the hotel many times walking from Chitlom BTS to Big C. Interesting to know what an overnight stay costs.

I would not have Grand President on any list of hotels apart from "Worst in BKK" or "Hotels to Avoid Like the Plague" etc.

At that price point - Town Lodge or Swiss Grottino might be a better fit.

GP is totally hot if you like rooms that smell like cigarettes.

Ditto Ambassador >>>>>>>>>> AVOID.

The issue here is VALUE. Period. Do not expect services when you pay 800Bhat to be at the level of a five stars hotel which costs 4000Bhat/day. But those who cannot afford to spend 4000B may find lower priced hotels providing best VALUE. This is what this thread is all about. Do not compare different price range hotels in terms of VALUE. Even a 5 stars hotel may have a bad room and you may be unlucky to get it (what is "BAD" means different to different people. You asked non smoking, you got smoking because non smoking was soldout. Etc.) Some people view location to be very important and will take Nana hotel over Manhattan. Why? Location location location. Those who want be across the street from NEP will find Nana a VALUE for them, if they can get a good room (yes, there are good rooms there, at high floors, I have seen them... no smoke smell no carpet smell no noise). Staying at a very far place such a Town Lodge hotel, may not be a good VALUE, Try walking one hour (or even taking a taxi... same same... stuck in BKK traffic for one hour) is not what people may see as VALUE. Yes, Town Lodge has one bar, run by RTB. If someone is very lazy and perhaps it is his first time to BKK, all inclusive place such as Town Lodge may be OK. Not for my list. I think you (and RTB) may see people would go there perhaps one time, look at the bar, and then stay at other places as they gain experience with BKK. I.e. it could be a newbie hotel/bar combo. There are a few other places, which are quite far from the spots of interest. They do not make VALUE for my list though. Ambassador is not VALUE for me. I agree Manhattan is better. Swiss Grotto is not VALUE for me, at 1800Bhat, not including breakfast, nor having any hotel services (pool, gym, lobby, whatever you use) makes the price way off hence not a VALUE. But yet again, those places get to have guests whom do not know any better. Hence this thread. It is intended not to say what are all the possible hotels available in BKK. But to say which of the hotels offer VALUE based on the room rate, and services provided as well as location, etc. VALUE is subjective indeed. If you don't mind spending your time (daily excersie? LOL) walking long walks to any place of interest other than the Town Lodge own bar, then you will stay at that hotel. I wish the best of luck to RTB really, but I think business wise it was not a good decision, even if he got the place cheap from previous owners. Location Location Location... you know...

It is not easy to compare and decide what is VALUE given so many hotels and their different price ranges. I have been to all of those I have listed, and to others too (including Ambassador, Nana hotel and a few others, inspecting rooms). This is a thread I have started, to help those considering a place to stay. Not necessary newbies (actually for a newbie, I would suggest staying at as close as possible to the spots of interest, Nana Plaza, Patpong, Soi Cowboy etc.), and hence location would be a prime issue. Hope this info is helpful.

Cheers

Apollo

Apollo - Virgin - you are getting fairly anal about the whole thing.

But it's your thread so feel free to answer each & every post.

Lots of guys like staying at Swiss Grotinno, Majestic Suites Majestic Grande - all from word of mouth from this board.

Yes the same Swiss Grotinno that has no pool & no restuarant. About 30 seconds from Afterwork. Plenty of grub in Robinson's too.

Grand President is a dump. No one should ever stay there. President Group do not take good care of their properties.

Build & forget - old Thai custom.

I don't have a dog in the fight. Been livin here 14 years - have a house & thus don't stay in hotels.

Yes I object to you talking down to us & putting V A L U E in all caps.

We get it. Let the bros speak on this.

If I ever attacked you - you would know it. Grow some skin.

Question: Are you going to post a long winded diatribe after any member states his opinion? Rock on sport.

The Grand President and the Royal President are not in the same class of Swiss Grottino (by the way, it has a restaurant, you are charge extra over the 1800B for breakfast though, it is not what I call VALUE). Swiss Grottino I would compare to Manhattan. Difference is 800Bhat vs 1800Bhat/day, hence it is not on my VALUE list.

Why are you upset? I am just making my opinion here, Have I offended you by saying my opinion? If so then I am sorry. You may have had a bad experience with the RP, and there are threads to debate that hotel on this forum. For me it was always good. The President group has remodeled that property by the way (don't know what you are saying about Thai custom? Thais do take great pride why offend the Thais now too? You are really not a nice person). You are free to stay at Town Lodge or SG, but seems you are living in Thailand for 14 years so I guess it has been some time since you have stayed at any hotel in BKK, guess you are just one of those people getting into a discussion without knowing anything about, but this is OK its your opinion...

Cheers

Apollo

What about along with classications like: value, services, etc... we also throw in situation, ie. the right hotel for the right situation.
So for example what would be the recomendation for me? I have my own place in bkk and like to keep a resonably low profile. However I looking for a regular (once a wk) hotel where I can host little 'parties'. Myself an entourage of 3-5.. The party will be include going out to nightclub and coming back to room perhaps late and loud. Where are the best hotels to accomidate this behaviour. I realize I am paying for a double room, it will be myself and my associate checking in to one room. I'm looking to fix into the value model under 2000-2200bht or so for a double. Also this is sort of putting liberal acceptablity into the context of evaluation as well. A pool (again with free no rules use) would be a plus as well.

Suggestions?? fire away gents.
