Swiss Grottino I would compare to Manhattan. Difference is 800Bhat vs 1800Bhat/day, hence it is not on my VALUE list. Cheers Apollo
I know one thing. Your definition of VALUE and mine are miles apart if you consider Manhattan on par to Swiss Grottino. I have stayed in both and IMHO there is a reason one costs 1000 Bhat/day more. By the way I think both are good Value in there price range. If you want a pool, breakfast and fancy lobby you might consider something else over the Grottino but for me those things are not important. bimmher

Fanta - late & loud? I don't think there are any. The neighbors (who presumably are trying to sleep) will be calling the front desk. JMHO. ------------------------------------------------------------------- So since Apollo decided to hijack his own thread allow me to weigh in. Location - in & of itself - has f*** all to do with VALUE (insert bold 24 point text here). For exapmle. Best value in Bangkok is probably Siam Beverly. It is half the price of the same thing if it were located in Soi 11. Town Lodge - while it might not suit YOUR needs for location location location is quiet quiet quiet. Might suit some bros extremely well. Before you start moaning about the Siam Beverly - let me remind you that there are 20 world class massage parlors within a 20 minute walk. Plus Fortune Town, Lotus, Jusco, Carrefour & Robinson are right across the street. O yeah - & one of those choose your own fish Seafood Markets too. MRT 5 mins to Asoke & Cowboy. Siam Beverly - one of the best VALUE hotels in the world.

fanta4: as dotcom has stated, I do not think there will be any hotel that will let you be loud late at night with a party of 5 people. I do not know about Siam Beverly he has suggested, but if you want to book it and try here is a link: http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/bangkok/siam_beverly.html It shows a 777bhat for 2 rate per day. Don't know this hotel so I cannot comment, I assume dotcom knows it well and has used it. I can only suggest you a link to try and book it once and see. 777 bhat may be a lucky number too, and wont be that bad to try (they may not let you in the next time though so you should keep it low noise after midnight... You may want to try a suite, they list it for 2800b/day for 4 persons (quad) suggests at this rate may allow a bit of wilder noise/party... Cheers, Apollo

It's up pretty close to the Grand Hotel - if that helps you. I drew a single line to show that my 2 comments are in no way related. Good to see that Apollo is micro managing the thread. Tell fanta4 he is off topic.

Sort of off topic but if you go to Khon Khaen and book online you can stay at the Sofitel there for around $40 U.S. and it's one of the best hotels i've stayed at anywhere in the world. It has a decent fitness room, attached treatment/massage room (legitimate), and a pool. They also have 3 large restaraunts, a coffee shop, ballroom in the main areas of the hotel. In the basement floor they have a gentleman's club (!), german restaraunt, italian food place, sushi bar, and a night club. The rooms are also extremely nice for the money. Something comparable in the states would cost around $199 a night minimum.

Modusoperandi - you have picked a good one there. Mrs Shreddie and I were also very impressed with the Sofitel in Khon Kaen - we paid about THB1800 per night for our double room, but that was about 6 years ago. Stunning bathrooms - the size of some hotel rooms. The bedrooms were also huge and very well maintained. I think we were lucky we were on a high floor, however, as the drainage in the shower could have been better - the waste water did clear but it took 2 or 3 minutes. (I say 'shower' but you could probably have parked a small family car in the space that called itself a shower). On checkout I filled in one of those forms to comment on the hotel and the service etc. I would not normally do that but was so taken with the place I felt the need to comment. I remember writing that it was one of the best hotels I had ever stayed in; and like you Modus I have stayed in many hotels in many different countries. At the time it was certainly VFM, and when I have been paying for the hotel bill it has still to be bettered.

I still think the Swiss grottino is a great value. I prize the private entrance, the safe, a good TV now with dvd, a modern clean look, not over priced wet bar, great lighting, high quality linen, robes and the sliding wood window covers for complete darkness. Plus no odd looks from the friendly staff when you have walked in with your 3rd girl that day. I remember the suspicious look on many of my TG's faces when walking down that ally off Soi 19 only to see that look change to a pleasant one upon entering the room. I would say in the last year none of the TG I took back there knew about the place. As many know your TG often like lights out, but the under the bed lighting is never questioned. With Robinson's around the corner and the Family Mart right there--what else does one need. I save my swimming for Ptty or PKet and as far as a western breakfast I come to LOS for Thai food and not eggs and potatoes. Besides I rarely get up that early. On the down side the mattresses are a little to firm. Happy posting

All the hotels on my list have in room safe, and are guest friendly, etc. All but one (Majestic Suites - but it does represent value to me since its location is good and its price is reasonable - about 1200B/day single), have a pool and a big lobby, a reasnable gym, good beds (not the hard ones that you cannot sleep in, but just a balanced soft and hard I like - too soft by the way is not good for you...). They all have good buffet breakfast (again MS is a fixed breakfast meal - not buffet style - but is included and for those who eat little or none may be fine), with quite a nice varaiety. All hotels have quiet rooms, so you can sleep, and the rooms are acceptable for the price (if you pay 800 bhat you expect a clean room, if you pay 4000 bhat you expect a fantastic room hence expectations match the price), although the President properties will provide you with a suite. Some hotels on my list may have rooms in less good condition - what to do? ASK to move to another room and be persistant. If needed call your booking agent and tell them you got a room that is not accpetable (do that as a last resort if they tell you no other rooms are available - common excuse for them not to move you even if they have rooms - they are trained to say this excuse even at 5 stars hotel - need to speak with the front desk manager or hotel general manager if needed, and insist you cannot take the room - for example because of your medical condition - invent something if needed - or whatever excuse you may think of. Doing the above with polite approach always, may help you next time get a better room especially if you write in advance hence ask for a busines card with email address, the higher up you get the better - not good with rank and file front desk workers they usually do not have the power to assign rooms or upgrade you to anything other than what was assigned for you). This can be the case even for high cost 5 stars hotels such as the Westin. To assure a good room be friendly, and talk with front desk manager if needed in a polite tone. You will do well if you get his/her email and business card and write to him/her in advance, and you will get wonderful service if you smile and remember her/his name and others at the front desk. You will be suprized how this simple suggestions may get you the best rooms and free upgrades... Hope this is helpful. Cheers! Apollo

Apollo. It ok to display the rates in Baht, but Asia rooms charge in USD, so you will not get a direct comparison. God knows what exchange rate they use? HotelReslist is a good tool, but again certain websites advertise in Thai Baht and charge in USD. Not sure how we can get a standardised comparison, keeping all factors neutral.
