Each visit to Bangkok, I try a different hotel, hoping to eventually find one I like. I just stayed at Livingstone's and here is my view of pros and cons:
PROS:
1) Good American breakfast (with real orange juice) and serves at all hours.
2) Decent looking girls in the Sports Lounge, and they are friendly, if not expensive. Maybe it varies from girl to girl but the one I talked with wanted 2500 Baht for short time and wouldn't budge on that price. Didn't check bar fine, as did not want to even pay the 2500 Baht.
3) Friendly and helpful staff
4) Completely girl friendly hotel
5) Very clean hotel, including rooms, lobby, pool area.
6) In room hotpot with complementry coffee & sugar packs
7) Big bathrooms, great fixtures, lots of hot water.
8) Very comfortable beds, pillows
9) Fast in-room wireless and ADSL
CONS:
1) Outside rooms are noisy, being only 10 ft from back wall of street bars. Base sound is low to medium loud from 8pm to 2am (noise comes and goes). Outside rooms (mine) was over walkway leading to lobby so noisy groups of people coming and going all nite. Thin walls and sliding glass doors allowed alot of noise in.
2) Tried to change to quiet room but said inside rooms are larger and more expensive and full anyway. Not much help for this problem.
3) In line with Soi 33 prices or not, I still found my room small and not good value, should be priced 25% less to be adequate value. I paid 1800 Baht.
4) 7% VAT and 10% service charge added to the bill on checkout. Probably normal for BKK but still the 17% made the room even more expensive than it was already.
5) Expensive laundry, ie. pair socks 50 Baht. Over 1000 Baht for small amount of laundry, so took down street and was 230 Baht.
6) No lounge chairs around pool at all. Many tables with thatched roof overhead, primarily for their restaurant. I come from a cold rainy climate and I want to lay in the sun and then swim at times. Could not do, had to go to another hotel to do this. Recommendation to management: get some lounge chairs and get rid of the thatched roof and tables on far end of pool. If you must, then have lounge chairs during the day and then move them off and put in table and chairs for your restaurant crowd. Was there a week and did not see one person in the pool. What a waste!
7) Most things at Livingstones seem a little pricey for what they offer, ie. 150 Baht mixed drinks from lobby bar seem a little steep for this 3 star hotel.
8) In room safe was not bolted down.
All in all, I think there is better value in BKK. But with some changes this could be a good place to stay.

So I guess that makes it 4K for ST, I had taken my own so I wasn't after a companion.
I did check out the girls though and they did not look anything special to me.
It was my first visit to soi 33 and even I was surprised how expensive things were, I guess I have been spoilt with Pattaya prices.
I was surprised at LL that the beer was 75 + taxes, first time I have come upon the pre-tax price. Hotel OK though.

I've stayed at LL a few times, and I like it. Yes there are cheaper places, but it's good value and has a good atmosphere. I've posted many reports and some pics on ISG.
BTW - I was at LL for two nights last week, and could not access BTF while I was there. Only happened this visit. Not sure why.

Hey Gus, how you doing. Same here, I am surprised at the prices in Bangkok, and LL. Both drink, hotel and girl prices. USD$100 for a shorttime in sports lounge at LL? Seems ridiculous. Went to Cowbow, specifically Dollhouse, Shark, Baccus (sp?), and all girls were 2500 Baht shortime with 700 Baht average bar fine, still pricey. Maybe its me, so some of you guys can do better. Finally left dollhouse with a "hello girl/waitress" and paid 3000 Baht for all nighter. Was leary at first because I like to check the girls I take out carefully, before, you know, lift the skirt, check the legs, stretch marks, also tit sag, etc., but discretely and in fun atmosphere. This girl wouldn't let me discretely check anything out, even in fun, but she said in my room she would be good to go. Whoa nellie, was she good to go, SHE DID EVERYTHING and wouldn't stop. Had to leave for the airport at 7:00 the next morning and just couldn't get out of the shower with her. Worth the money! Oh yeah, unrelated, but try that Greek wrap type pork sandwich from the cart at the end of Cowboy. Clean, good and run by nice Thai lady with Egyptian husband that sometimes hangs around.
Gus, I agree, I am spoiled with Pattaya prices and another thing, Pattaya vs. Bangkok girls. Hands down Pattaya has what seems like more girls and they definately appear to be prettier and cheaper. Still easy to get 500 Baht shortime in Pattaya with 200 or 300 Baht bar fine. Nana complex go go bars, seem to have the ugliest girls I had seen, and got uglier the more levels you went up. But I have to admit I was surprised at the quality of the some of the frelancers that hang around outside Nana hotel. And they start showing early too, in case you might want one around dinner time.
Piper101, what is it about the atmosphere at LL that you like. Seems like any other hotel in BKK in regards to atmosphere, except for the African motif, which seems out of place in BKK. And maybe average value for Soi 33, but just doesn't seem like good value when considering BKK overall. And yeah, I had the same problem at LL, could not access this forum last week. Never did find out why.

The "atmosphere" of Livingstones is largely due to its owner, who posts under the name of "Giotto" in his own forum on another board. Many interesting adventures are posted there.
Here's one from me. It was the final night I spent at Livingstone's last week. By then I was shagged and still hung-over).

Well, I stumbled across a little gem last night. The night started with Giotto, Too Jaded and I cruising Soi Cowboy. We checked out a few bars.
