I'll visit Bangkok in July and have lined up dates with former students I'd like to find a hotel that is guest-friendly but not surrounded br bars and massage parlors. I'd prefer the place to be near the BTS or MRT and have WiFi too.

AT,you could do worse than try the Town Lodge which is at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 18 well away from any bar(other than Toxic on the ground floor but it is quiet and relatively unobtrusive).
I suggest you read the Town Lodge and Toxic threads.

You can always try one of the Center Points - CP Wireless Road, or CP Petchburi are fine places (always Petchburi has slummed a little lately with a greater influx of Arabs and Chinese).

My apartment in the Victory Monument area has daily rentals, and is guest friendly, with wifi, in a Thai neighborhood off Ratchaprarop. There's a motortaxi stand right outside the gate, and a 7-11 at the beginning of the soi.
It's a very quiet neighborhood, with quite a few karaoke bars about 2 blocks away, then Chayo Phaya II is 3 blocks away. It's a bt60 max taxi ride to soi Cowboy at night.
It's close to the Ratchaprarop BTS station that goes to the airport, and connects with the rest of BTS, or the Victory Monument station isn't too far way. It's a longer walk, or only a bt20 motortaxi ride. Kinda like trying to walk from Townlodge to soi Cowboy, and thinking it's only a 10 minute walk....lolol.
