Is that just a slangy short form of "raka" or is it a real word?

kha is a real word.   It is not slang and it is not a shortened form of rakha.  The kha in rakha is middle tone.  kha as in kha tua is falling tone.  The meaning is not quite the same.  rakha means price.  kha is a bit more general.  It can mean price, but it can also mean cost or value.  (There's also kha with a high tone meaning to engage in trade as in rankha, kha with a low tone meaning galangal as in tom kha gai, kha with a rising tone meaning leg, kha with a falling tone meaning servant as in kharadchagan, kha with a middle tone meaning a kind of grass used for thatching a roof as in langkha. Isn't Thai fun?) The a in all the above is long.

Note that while tua with a middle tone means body, tua with a rising tone means ticket.  So if you find yourself needing to ask somebody what the cost of a ticket is, be sure not to forget the rising tone!

I think I'll always use the mid tone. I might get lucky, and if not they'll just write it off as the ramblings of a clueless farang.

Since we are accumulating information in this thread, let me add some information about the typical pricing structure.  There is a lot of variation from place to place, but the basic structure is usually the same. There are three major components in what you pay:

a) The cost of what you drink.  There are two options here.

(i) You can open a bottle of whisky/brandy/gin.  The median price is perhaps 2500 baht.  They will keep your bottle for you between visits.  Mixers may or may not be included in the cost of the bottle.

(ii) You can buy an individual drink (beer, cocktail, whatever).  The median price here is perhaps 300 baht.

b) The cost of a private karaoke room.  This is a single charge for the whole night.  It depends on the size of the room.  If you use the public lounge area, you obviously don't have to pay this.

c) The cost of the girls time.  This is the most confusing part.  It is calculated in terms of numbers of drinks (deum), but these drinks have nothing to do with what the girls actually drink.  One "drink" gets you one unit of the girls time, where that unit depends on each place and is typically 40 or 45 minutes; one "drink" costs maybe 300 baht.  There's often a starting charge of between 1 and 3 drinks. Also partial units of time get rounded up.  For example, if there's a starting charge of 3 drinks, and the unit of time is 40 minutes, and the per drink charge is 300 baht, and you stay for a total of 1 hour, you will get charged 5 drinks for a total of 1500 baht.  Note that changing girls restarts things: so with the above example, if you stayed for a total of an hour but changed girls at the 45 minutes mark, you would be charged 9 drinks for a total of 2700 baht.

There are often some minor extras.  There may be a cover charge.  They will often try to give you fruit or some sort of snack, even if you don't ask for it, and will charge you for it.  The mamasan/salesperson will often put themselves down for a drink or two (one is normal and should be allowed).

Most places offer membership.  Typically all the items a), b), c) have a regular non-member's price, and a member's price perhaps 20% lower than the non-member's price.  As well as giving you the lower members price, a membership package typically includes some number of units of a), b), c).  Before you buy a membership, you need to ask the following questions:

1) How much does it cost?  Places often offer two or more different membership packages at different prices. 30,000 baht is a common price point.  The most expensive I've seen is 100,000 baht.

2) When does it expire?  1 year is common.

3) How many bottles of your preferred beverage are included?

4) Are mixers included or extra?

5) How many girls drinks are included?

6) How many karaoke room uses are included?

Typically you can negotiate with the salesperson on 3-6.  Make sure you get a mix between 3 and 5 that matches what your need.

The salesperson (the current trend seems to be to use the word sales rather than mamasan) who sells you your membership will be responsible for looking after you subsequently, in particular for hooking you up with the girls. So when deciding whether to buy a membership, you also need to evaluate your salesperson. You can ask for a particular salesperson if one has been recommended to you, otherwise you will get allocated one at random.  If you get a bad salesperson, it can be real problem: particular girls often have a close association with one particular salesperson; a bad salesperson will try to direct you exclusively to her particular girls (from whom she may be getting a kickback), rather than to girls that meet your requirements.
