Note last night [Friday] - Rivas [ Nightclub in the Sheraton, Sukhumvit ] - has now started charging a 500 bt / 2 drinks, entry - maybe only Fri/Sat, but it certainly scarred off alot of the freelancers who were starting to gather there on those nights - most can afford to sit on one drink, whilst waiting for a candidate to buy them some more, but when going out in 2s/3s as normal, the group is a short time behind before they have started, - also Guys would sometimes just have 1 drink, and if nothing took their fancy, move on - allowing Rivas, like Spasso - charge enough as it is for drinks, - you'd think they would wake up to the fact that they are actually going to lose business with this approach ....

Too bad for Rivas, unfortunately charging more to get less seems to be the norm in Thailand.
Similar to when they put up the toll rates, although we can now see why they thought they were loosing money - it was all going in other peoples pockets. Hopefully Rivas will get the hint before long, but unlikely.

That's a pity, I recall many the nightcap at Rivas the couple of times I stayed there. They at least had a selection of cognacs there, and occasionally a decent band. I'm sure that I could talk my way past the cover, but it's certain to drive away the freelancers, and then what's the point, eh? or maybe they are attempting to scrub their image?

very bad policy indeed. Just been there early in December with PhantomV nad no cover charge was requested....SHIT!!!!
Lots of freelancers and high class Katoeys....the guys with fancy clothes, nice cars and tons of jewelry on ....
Thanks God that Phantom got a bottle of gin (3K) and his member card....if some of the sacred liquid is still available we won´t require to pay anything later on....

hello to all:
I just noticed this thread, and I must say that I was disappointed also about the cover charge also. But, let me add a silver lining ....The new band at Riva's is much better than other bands that had been there in the past. Matter of fact, they are the best band I have seen in a while (and I go to a lot of bars in Sing, BKK, PI).
Add that to the fact that Spasso (in Hyatt) just "up'd" their cover to 800Baht/person.
Put both of those 2 reasons together, I noticed this past Fri/Sat nights that the pick of FL's was much better in Riva's than it had been in the past.
Of note: Today I found out there is a "Sheraton Grande Club" card that cost 5500B/year, and that gives you many discounts such as 20% off all drinks, plus lots of other benefits. I haven't asked (because I don't live here and the card is for residents only...I am staying at the hotel) but, this card might (?) get you free, or with a discount. ...yeah, I know, what does this do for the FL's?
Well, I found the choices to be great this past weekend.

as a postscript to my note above:
Hotel guest don't pay (I didn't). And I found out if you go there to eat, (they have pizzas, etc) you don't pay either.

Excellent info. I've been there early in December but was not aware of that "Sheraton Grande Club" member card....will ask more info on this stuff....
The band was good. You might refer to those black guys with Jamaican looking, right?
The band at CM2 is also nice. I like it.

From a business standpoint... management might just want to get rid of all the people who think 500 Baht is too much of an entry fee. They have prime location, but they aren't nearly making the kind of profit that nearby Forte, MOS, Orbit, Lalunar, QBar, etc. (all places with covers) are making. Trendy Bangkokians (foreigners and locals) often don't like to hang out in bars packed with aging freelancers and people counting how many 20's and 100's (Baht bills) they have left. Yes, a few is fine.... but when it's packed with them, what you have is the Grace Hotel or Thermae (now there's a couple of really class hangouts).
Props and not dissin' anyone who digs those two places though.
