Enjo Kosai = Compensated Dating
It made the headlines in Japan at the end of 1990s. It's a phenomenon mostly found in Tokyo areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya. It's still existing in Japan, but I presume that the media exaggerated the numbers/facts to produce bigger headlines. The numbers which can be found in the net are mostley based on very weak facts or pure speculation by sensationalist journalists.
It's just prostitution of school girls who are contacted by elder men through phone clubs and meet them for dinner and sex. I have never heard of any Gaijin involved in Enjo Kosai. But occasionally you read of arrests of Japanese men since this is sex with minors.
The girls don't do it for urgent needs but for the latest Prada bag or other luxury items.
Enjo Kosai is a manifestation of the preference of Japanese men for young girls preferably in their school uniforms - If you have used the Tokyo subway daily for some time you can understand their strong phantasies concerning school girls, seeing cute girls in cute uniforms day in day out right in front of you.

I can understand the fascination. While it Tokyo I had my picture made with about 40 school girls around me just to show the picture to friends. A friend of mine in Japan (older lady, mid 30's) took the picture and thought it was quite funny.

When I was a young green eared punk kid, just starting to have those monster urges that soon drove me to distractions, I found Shingaku, Shabuya & Uno. Help me with the spelling, I'm dong some serious damage to a bottle of fine Kentucky Bourbon right now.

I remember when that 'enjo kosai' was getting press. Nice to imagine you could someday indulge their passion for the latest fad-phone.
I've read more recently that many women in Japan are not interested in pursuing relationships, per-se, with men these days- only interested in the occasional hook-up, shag, and release concept.

Your adventure in "Shinjuku", "Shibuya" and "Ueno" sounds great. I didn't know that Ueno has/had any P4P, but near by is Asakusa which was the biggest entertainment area until WWII.
The times you could stagger into most P4P bars as a farang without beeing introduced by a Japanese mate are long gone and I heard that it became even more difficult since HIV came to Japan.
