Agree entirely with Sporadic, Calzoid and snpark.

I remember the very first day I got here, five years ago, coming out of the hotel, walking across the sandlot/car park right next door (which, needless to say, now has a block of flats built on it) and thinking, f*** me, it's a desert. It's not actually a place where humans should be living. Cockroaches and ghaf trees, yes. Humans, no.

You can't help feeling that some day, somehow, it will end in tears. A sectarian bomb would do it like a shot, for sure, although I must say I admire the way the govt here has remained scrupulously neutral, a bit like Switzerland, so I think the terrorist threat is thankfully low. But the economic system - with galloping inflation, very low interest rates and therefore gallons of cash slopping around - is perfectly primed for boom and bust.

One interesting and little publicised fact: according to research, lots of tourists have come here in the last 2-3 years to have a look, especially from the UK, but Dubai gets very little in the way of return visits. Once you've
been to the beach, wandered round the old parts of Bur Dubai, had a look round the shopping malls, been to a few nice places for dinner and shagged a Cyclone A-lister, you've pretty much done it.

It's certainly not the place it was just five years ago. Personally, I just spent this afternoon talking to the visiting HR guy from my company (I work for a worldwide network) and this is going to be my last year here.

Besides the diehard expats, it was seen as being "chic" (sorry) to jet off to DXB five years ago. Today? Doubtful.

The place is almost totally devoid of charm, I can think of 10 places off the top of my head where I would rather go for a beach and some nightlife.

I do sometimes feel bad for what might happen, I know quite a few locals who are really decent folks, but the real toll will be on the other 80% of the population, they are disposable.

I hope I am wrong in the long run, we need more moderate, tolerant states everywhere, but especially in this region.

BTW, about three years ago, a carbomb was discovered in Dubai, by accident, pure luck.

The off duty cop thought these guys were selling booze out of a car boot, and called his on-duty LE pals, who discovered some Taliban types loading the boot up with explosives.

The first cop got a promotion and the whole thing was covered up, not a word.

It could all go pear shaped in an instant.

Rumor control says the UAE has made certain financial deals deals with certain groups to leave DXB alone, but that never works in the long run.

Actually, about the Wafi robbery, it probably makes some people feel more at home.

Dubai: It's the end of the world and we know it.... But I feel fiiiiine. (Apologies to REM).

Dubai's not such a bad place. It has its good and bad points like anywhere. Home is where you make it, and what you make of it. As for regular tourism - I agree - better places to go.

LEBANESE

Several posts back someone asked where to find Lebanese non-P4P girls in Dubai (30s and 40s). Very rare. If they're not married by their late-20s, there's something very iffy about them.

I had a 27 year-old Lebanese girlfriend about 5 years ago. After going out with her a few weeks, the "marriage" word came up frequently. A few weeks later it was direct pressure to get married. Her cultural and biological clocks were ticking fast.

I started to do everything I could to be a bad boyfriend to make her dump me (so she could save face in the break-up - she has big tough brothers!) But it didn't work. I even started to let her come to my apartment only on a Friday night each week (while I shagged hookers several times during the week. ). She still wouldn't let go. Eventually I had to give her the old "Let's just be friends" story.

Freaky thing was she wanted anal sex 95% of the time. It soon lost its novelty, and I had to work hard to get pussy sex for a naughty thrill. Usually it's the other way around.

I'm sure that's true Sporadic. Perhaps DBX have actually offered them money to stay away. Perhaps more likely, there's so much dosh tied up here, coming from both the men in the white hats and the black hats, that there's a tacit agreement to leave it alone. Again, like Switzerland in the world wars.

As was in the area I decided to have a look around the Golden Triangle and see if there was any sign of displacement from the Cyclone.

Jockeys’ 8:50 to 9:30

The bad – Getting served is a nightmare, some of the slowest service I have encountered for a long time.

The good – A few very nice looking ‘Stanis I have not seen before, must be the girls mentioned by Calzoid..

One interesting thing was there was not a single African, I noticed one being turned away at the door. Other than that the usual mix of PRC and CIS, the PRC’s were a bit thin on the ground. No sign of cyclone refugees. On the way out I spotted a sign I had not see before. “Adult Place with Adult Attitude”

Imperial 9:35 to 10:15

They tried to hit me with 50 AED entry, 2 drinks included, I said I only wanted one drink and would go elsewhere, as I turned away they called me back and let me in. I bought my beer – 25AED, so there is no mark-up like some places.

No sign at all of a refugee influx. The usual gaggle of CIS girls were hanging out near the door. Many looked very young and either looked scared to death or hard as nails.

There were a few passable PRCs, the best by far was occupied. One familiar girl stopped for an interview (Miss Burberry without one of her trade mark outfits??) One girl stood out with her school marm look, and a very impressive rack beneath her sweater.

While I was contemplating School Marm’s rack an African girl sneeked up on me. Nice face, and pleasant demeanour. I did not notice until she walked away, one of the largest asses I have ever seen, however it would not be the biggest one I would see this evening.

I was toying with the idea of hitting the York, but in the end decided against it. Some friends were in Goodfellas watching soccer, I thought I would join them and keep one eye on what was going up the stairs, but when they wanted 50 AED entry – to a sport bar WTF! I retired to the Music Room instead. Here a spotted the second unfeasibly large ass of the night. A T 54, unlike the girl at the Imperial it was more in keeping with the rest of her frame.

While I tend to agree with a lot of the points raised by Sporadic and Otho, in general, I am with you on this one. For an expat, as opposed to a visitor the place is OK. You have to keep some of the issues in perspective. For example, as bad as the traffic is it’s not really any worse than some parts of the UK. The proportion of crazy drivers is much higher here, but DXB certainly does not hold the monopoly. And if you want to see crazy, just go to Kuwait!

Dubai Eye recently discused a survey were cities were ranked for quality of life offered to expatriates.

The top 5 – Zurich, Geneva, Vancouver, Vienna, Auckland. - Abu Dhabi and Dubai came joint 58th,.And ranked top in the Middle East; From this can we conclude that EMAAR’S next project will be jacking up the Hajar Mountains so there is decent outdoor skiing nearby?

One think that does really annoy me is the treatment of the labour force, which is the glue that holds the whole crazy place together. There is injustice in the crappy contracts and conditions but it’s the attitude expressed by many that some how they should no be allowed into the parts of town where “decent” people live/ shop/ work that really gets my goat. While many a Jumeriah Jane may loudly express this view, sadly it is often the view of their own compatriots.

I guess we will agree to disagree on these points.

It just seems like this town is trying to milk every dirham they can - especially in the entertainment market. Being charged a cover (which I refuse to pay unless it’s a Thurs) to subsidize those who can’t afford to drink and just stand around trying to cop a feel is ridiculous. Then on top of that - paying 7usd for a beer and 11usd for a JWB is hard to validate.

What keeps me here is I do to my employer what Dubai does to me x3.

Of all the places I have been – this is the only place where I preferred working to partying.

Piper – u r absolutely right Dubai is not a bad place and it is what u make of it, but there are limitations.

I am perfectly content to live in a “not bad place” as long as the numbers are there.

I am still bored to tears – will be in Bangkok in 6 weeks – love LOS!

BC,

I occasionally get paired up playing golf with some local contractors -hearing them brag about the $1usd a day wages is sickening - it saddens me as well - the amazing thing is the end result of the laborers efforts yields NY/London prices.
Talk about a profit margins!

There has to be a correction in the horizon, as these mega projects are completed the 80% of the workforce making under 10Kdhs monthly will not be able to afford to live here - and there are not enough Sheiks in the ME to buy all these luxury condo's as vacation rentals -are there?

By the way where can I find that girl in the property commercial that walks out of her office stripping herself down to her Bikini and walks onto a yacht - I believe the line was redefining luxury and accommodations for all lifestyles –I think it was the Business Bay commercial –I always laugh when I see that wondering what the locals or hardliners think of the ad.

Sorry about bitching about this place – I would write more field reports but honestly I only go out on Fridays and its like groundhog day, -drunk-negotiate- agree-shower-bj-muffdive- scrub-1/2 bj-insert sexual position-massage –sleep, if LT repeat at 10am.

Other wise I am in search of "another prop to occupy my time"

Aloha

It appears Dubai is becoming more liberal vis-a-vis massage parlours. Another opened up 200m towards maktoum bridge from Lamcy called Soul and Spirite (sic).

Like Oxygen Spa in garhoud, very professional oil massage with hot towel treatment afterwards (to clean off the oil). Much of the massage is around the butt and upper thighs with lots of accidental touching, just what I like, erotic and relaxing.

Unlike Oxygen, it is chinese instead thai, the "therapists" are younger. The room is so dark and the music relatively loud and lots of hints of extra services, including chinese take away They had many nice rooms (including one with a queen size bed) with venetian blinds for doors. One bad thing is they were playing '70s elevator music including mannilow : ( Price, AED 160 for 60 minutes.

At Oxygen, they now offer something really weird, a hand job where they dont actually touch mr happy, the masseuse presses the pubic bone and other parts of the groin. This is all done quietly so the Mamasan doesnt here.

Of all the places I have been – this is the only place where I preferred working to partying.
This will be strongly colouring our respective opinions. My last post was many years in KSA, other prime locations my employer can offer include, Khartoum (beaten only by Baghdad and some place in the CAR for bottom place in survey I quoted), Kuwait, Tripoli and Cairo, only the latter holds any appeal.

Beer prices = £ 2.30 - £ 3.90 are in the same range as London and less than a lot of Northern Europe, so again it’s relative. But I agree on cover charges. I only pay in exceptional circumstances. And agree about profit margins with much lower labour costs.

Things I like in Dubai include the range of ethnic restaurants (not the ones in hotels that cater to the "European" market, but real Chinese and Indian places run by, and primarily catering to those nationalities groups.

As a Dubai bachelor, I think the relationship I have with my regular helps, much more like a GF, mistress or Xiao Lao Po than a client / WG. We go out, to restaurants, shops, civilian bars and act like a normal couple, unload the frustrations of our respective day jobs on each other etc. It’s nearly a year now since I stole her from under Sporadic’s nose.

That was in the Cyclone, and as far as I can recall the last time I paid a cover charge.
