By the way, you can join Jockeys as a member. The cost is ridiculously negotiable, but expect to pay about 400 - that's once and for all, not annual. If you use it fairly regularly over a year, it works out. You get an extra couple of dirhams off your drink in happy hour, no door charge (which they seem to have got a lot more stringent on lately), generally better service from the waitresses who always look out for the members, a free drink on Friday lunchtime and a free entry in the weekly draw. This is a 'snowball' - if the first prize winner isn't there to claim it, it rolls over. Last year it reached a quite astonishing figure - I think it was something like 3,500 dirhams! Of course, it's not cash, it's credit behind the bar. It was finally won by a mate of mine, or actually his Chinese missus who drinks nothing stronger than orange juice (maybe a Baileys once a year), so the poor guy had to drink it himself. But the book they used to record the transactions and tick off the credit was about as thick as Yellow Pages! If you're interested, just ask to speak to the manager. I forget his name, maybe Sharef or Shireen, but he's a short Pakistani guy, usually with a shaved head, always in a suit and tie. Nice guy, very pleasant. I also think that Jockeys has benefited from the other venues' scares and closures, with some really quite lovely little things turning up there. Last weekend there were two very cute PRCs in tartan schoolgirl miniskirts and fishnet stockings. Delicious! On the downside, parking anywhere near it is shocking now, since they've closed the big car parks near Choitrams. And the traffic coming down Mankhool Road is unbearable since they've narrowed the crossroads outside the York. The era of stopping off for a quick one after work is well and truly over.

On another topic, I have to say fair play and hats off to the DXB powers that be for opening the new bridge. Even at rush hour, sticking on the main road, I'm suddenly getting home from SZ Road near the Dusit Dubai to my flat near the British Embassy in 15-20 minutes! Incredible! And I hear they still have to open another six or eight lanes on the new bridge, which will make it even better. Credit where it's due. Again though, the downside is it makes it even more unattractive to drive home via the golden triangle.

Thanks for explaining that one. I did know that there was a membership system, but had no idea how it worked. When I used to live close by it may have been worth it, but I am an infrequent visitor these days. Quote: from Otho on 8:54 pm on April 26, 2007 no door charge (which they seem to have got a lot more stringent on lately)
They tried to hit me and a couple of others with a charge one Thursday a few weeks back, we declined and went to the Music Room. As a result of the Cyclone closure we may see alternative venues cashing in and charging more to get in? Quote: from Otho on 9:01 pm on April 26, 2007 I have to say fair play and hats off to the DXB powers that be for opening the new bridge
Yes, it's made a big difference. Where traffic used to backup to the Metropolitan it's relatively free flowing all the way to the trade centre now, unless you are trying to get off at the TC roundabout. There is also another bridge planned between the British Embassy area and the Sheriton in Deira. What is less certain is the effect the toll system will have. I think it's more about revenue raising than reducing congestion.

Actually, BC lasered in on her before I could even start a conversation... in retrospect, we were both impressed with how attractive and NICE she was, and at the end of the day, as a visitor, he had a heck of a lot more to offer the lady than I ever could. Frankly, I am happy for the both of them, but not surprised, they are both nice people. Now, about you and the six foot blonde...

Quote: from Otho on 10:13 pm on April 24, 2007 I remember the very first day I got here, five years ago, coming out of the hotel, walking across the sandlot/car park right next door (which, needless to say, now has a block of flats built on it)...
Had me laughing... remembering so many places I used to park (sandlot near Panarama Hotel, sandlot near Lamcy...) that are now gone. Where do people park downtown? If it wasn't for the paid parking lot behind Imperial... how would you see the golden triangle these days?
Quote: from Calzoid on 12:30 pm on April 26, 2007 Sorry about bitching about this place – I would write more field reports but honestly I only go out on Fridays and its like groundhog day, -drunk-negotiate- agree-shower-bj-muffdive- scrub-1/2 bj-insert sexual position-massage –sleep, if LT repeat at 10am.
Well put. How long have you been here? For me, first year was living an adolescent's fantasy: so many beautiful women I COULD have - just a bit of cash. 2nd year, still fun. 3rd, bit repititious. 4th year... like you say... 5th year... I pull on a weekend just to differentiate from a weekday. It's certainly NOT that that the quality of wg's has deteriorated - for sure it's my own point of view. I KNOW I can hit just about any club and find several to chose from, ones that I do find interesting. But not a big deal, and as you said, very repetitious. Well, at least I get a home cooked meal out of it, and a bit of feminine (as compared to bachelor) cleaning. So I agree with the others. Certainly MY reason for being here: the MONEY. The P4P just a nice fringe benefit. 5 years ago, when I first arrived, took a drive around the country 1 weekend. Haven't felt the need to do that since. For truly interesting scenery, Oman is the place. This is just one big sandbox (though they do a nice job of landscaping, given the cheap imported labor). Not a cheap place to live, especially given the rents. While I am grateful my employeer provides housing, it's also NOT real money in my pocket. And I don't get to travel... And how anybody can see this as a shoppers' paradise... I am so sick of MSRP... and shoddy service. Over the last 5 years, the traffic has certainly gotten much worse, so much so that it DOES impact my lifestyle. I HATE getting up in the morning (one of my weekend highlights is being able to switch off the alarm), but fear motivation gets me out of bed on the weekdays, to beat the traffic. That mid-week late afternoon assignation pretty much gone the way of available downtown parking... trip to my place not a problem, but the trip home after 6pm... forget it. I DON'T blame the taxi drivers for not wanting to go (last time, what used to be a 20 minute trip, she spent 90 minutes getting home). Was recently in Amsterdam, so agree with BC on the beer prices - hell, I thought the emeraiti's had just bought the place and imposed their price controls...
Quote: from Otho on 10:13 pm on April 24, 2007 It's certainly not the place it was just five years ago. Personally, I just spent this afternoon talking to the visiting HR guy from my company (I work for a worldwide network) and this is going to be my last year here.
I'm sure it's partly me, now jaded after 5 years here. Call me a heretic, but the thrill of walking into a bar, seeing any number of lovely faces that are available to sample, is long gone. There will always be new lovely young faces... and just how many can you do? I'm sure the younger guys will be saying "all of 'em", but, for myself, being older, these days, most seem to merge into a few generic faces: PRC, CIS, African. I do maintain my weekend pulls, if nothing else for the company and to pass the time, figuring to take advantage of the opportunity while I can. Certainly bars here a better deal than the Gentleman's clubs back home: There, look but DON'T touch. Here, when you pay for a lap dance, you get a lap dance that's worth the money, most times anyway. But all in all, every year, I think it'll be my last. But so far, every year, I'm offered an extension, and it's just easier to stay than to move on. Even though I do have a nicer lifestyle here than back home, every year, after visiting home, gets harder and harder to come back. All in all, if you have to work in the Middle East, this is a comfortable place to be. But a tourist destination? When I leave, I'm NOT coming back. As for other interests? Both Orbit AND Showtime, with an adsl internet connection.

Bingo, agreed 100% BUT, Just like in Thailand, it is easy to get jaded UNTIL you return to wherever you are from, and you find there are not droves of attractive and available ladies. I fell in love seven times today, but sadly, since this is home, I really cannot do anything about it. DXB does give me, as a visitor, the chance to act on impulse. In DXB, I tend to stick to regulars, but as I was leaving BKK, it struck me, I am going back to where I will no longer be surrounded by lovely Thai ladies. a real slap in the face. My advice gents, enjoy what you can, when you can, you never know when it will go away.

snpark - I was in there this afternoon for a quick pint and they were both there. It's now 9.20 Friday night (and I'm sitting quite contentedly at home, which pretty much endorses everything 11bravo just said!) so if you get round there now they could still be there! Only thing is, they've changed costume. One is in biker gear, still featuring the fishnets but now with tiny denim shorts, the other is in a sexy orange Chinese dress. But I'm sure they'd be happy to cater for special sartorial requests!

Unfortunately, I can't take a 6 month haitus back home, then return here... So, like you say, at 10:20, heading out to see who's around, not because I need to, but because I can...
