SNPark, While I understand your outrage at the hotel attitude, in fact, it IS illegal to cohabitate, and this includes tourists. It is also illegal for anyone to consume alcohol without a personal liquor permit, issued only to non-muslim residents. Indeed these rules are not enforced with tourists (besides, who carries around their marrige cert?) but the point is, they COULD be enforced if LE so desires. Once you have ticked off the local authorities, for any reason, you are wide open to prosecution. Something worth remembering IMHO.

Without a marriage license... yes.

As Sporadic says, it DOES include hotels. Close reading of the Gulf News "crime" pages, and those "additional" charges just jump out. "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore". That the laws are selectively enforced here should come as no surprise to anyone. Farhan20 didn't mention the nationalities involved, but that TOO plays an important role. Just as salaries differ between nationalities, so too the application of law. Now, for the 7Days report about the murdered American, and the "One member of staff at the hotel told 7Days that Darnman had several guest visit him during his stay... and that they often stayed until late at night. He is believed to have entertained at least one guest on the night before his body was discovered." I really hope the hotel got the passport copy; otherwise, more crackdowns...

When I do the rounds at ATM this week, I'll remind the tour operators not to accept bookings from unmarried couples. Pity that... no more Wayne Rooney and Coleen. No Frank Lampard and Elen. No Brad and Angelina at the Burj.... High profile, in all the papers visiting Dubai... and unmarried. No wonder unmarried couples think it's a blissful holiday destination! Sun tan lotion - check. Liam Gallagher hat - check. Marriage licence... um....

yes I do know that I have lived here 13 years I was just saying that the hypocrisy would mean if u stood your ground you WOULD get away with it because the repurcussions would be huge every travel agent would have to ensure all double bookings were legal etc etc anyway forget it u missed my point

groover thankyou you see my point i have lived here a long time, I know the rules, however 2 unmarried residents is treated entirely differently to 2 tourists as hotels are not classed as a private residence which includes the alcohol consumption issue sporadic I meant would YOU personally have accepted the abuse from the hilton hotel in fujairah? you would have just scurried back to dubai? you would have stood and said how dare you accuse my gf of being a hooker, she is here on holiday from china etc etc there is no way at all they would have prosecuted you in a hotel private residence is different so I strongly recommend that guy writes to hilton international h.o and demand to know why his chinese businesswoman gf was refused occupancy at the hilton on a pre booked holiday then see what they saw and what compensation they offer you kick up a fuss with the hotel as if it was THEIR fault then see their reply

SNPark, Actually, I think you missed the point. As I said, I understand your rage, and I have indeed taken a stand at several hotels when checking in, a quizzical "Is there some sort of problem with my wife and I staying here?" is usually sufficient. On two other occasions, I explained that my "wife" would be arriving on a later flight, and they did not dare ask for her passport. Much of it is attitude. However, the hotes are not classed differently to a private residence. It is still illegal to cohabitate, ANYWHERE. It is still, technically illegal to consume alcohol without a personal liquor permit. Period. Enforcement, as Bravo pointed out, is very selective, based upon race, social status, and of course, the possibility of creating bad press for DXB. My point was, and is, that if things do go pear shaped, and you make a scene, LE has many legal tools at their disposal to really sock it to you. Nothing to be really afraid of, just something to be aware of. Righteous indignation when one is in technical violation of the law is not a good idea anywhere. I suggest that complaining to Hilton Corporate will only get a mild response... "Sorry sir, but you and your friend did not have the required documentation, so we were unable to accomodate you. We are sorry." and not a lot more.
I was just saying that the hypocrisy would mean if u stood your ground you WOULD get away with it because the repurcussions would be huge
Probably, but then again, possibly not, with some serious consequences if you lose your cool. I suggest that the authorities would not be impressed with the "hipocrisy" arguement, indeed it might really piss them off. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

its not my rage, its someone else who paid for a holiday and was sent packing i was just offering advice but certainly all the times in dubai I have had weekends away I have never been asked for my partners details etc only a passport to register them and that includes the burj al arab i just find it incredulous that you personally would not make some sort of stand if it happened to you? anyway forget it, I didnt miss your point, I understand what you are saying, but it is 99.99999% unlikely that any couple checking into a hotel as both registered guests would be thrown out arrested deported etc because they werent married it just would not happen

no one said losing their cool, but a sane rational calm request to speak to the gm to ascertain what the problem is would not get you arrested and hilton int'l hq would never ever tell u that u had the wrong documents to stay there because that letter would be leaked to uk press same day and bam 95% of your tourists would cancel straight away

wow so much discussion on the topic. but it is a important one. my friend is from iran, and his 'gf' was from kazakhstan or one of the CIS countries. he was not asked to leave from hilton...but rather that the he was asked soo much questions and made a issue in very rude manner...that prompted him to leave. he said the manner in which the staff spoke to him was very embarassing in front of other ppl..so he left in a hurry. im not too sure why he did not take up this matter more, but I guess he was embarassed and left the place in anger.
