Muslim? Cohabitation? Fornication? That's a flogging offense (literally).

Perhaps the hotel staff didn't care for HIS hypocrisy, or perhaps his lack of religious convictions... Either/or...

And while they do promote tourism here, NEVER forget it is an Islamic country.

SteveStx: you still reading here? Your take on the matter.

========================

Driving into work this morning, heard this on a news report. While stopped for gas, took the opportunity to read the actual article from the Gulf News. At a full read, not as disturbing as the news report, BUT... Certainly NOT good news either (bold my highlights).

From Gulf News, 30 April 2007, page 1
Visit visa runs only twice in a row

A visitor to the UAE will only be allowed to make two visa runs at a stretch after which he/she must leave the country, Ministry of Interior officials said.

A visitor can stay for two months and extend it by another month. If the visitor wishes to stay longer, he/she will have to obtain a new visit visa, exit the country and return. The two-month stay again can be extended by a month. The visitor will then only be allowed another visa run. The total duration of stay will be nine months.

A ministry official said after the two runs, the person must leave the country for a full month and then return if he/she wishes.

In another decision, companies will not be allowed to sponsor Filipinas under the age of 25. They have to be sponsored by their blood relatives if they wish to enter the UAE on a visit visa, but will not be allowed to work if they are under 25.

Bit of déjà vu from early 2003: a similiar announcement about ending "infinite" renewals of visitor visas. Back then, MY bar was the Cyclone. A number of long term familiar faces left. These were successful wg's who could afford their own (sublet) apartments (no refund of the unused portion of the quarterly rent), furnished as a home (carpetbagger neighbors taking care of the furniture). They had never tried for the resident visa given the large wad of cash required, instead applying a couple nights' work receipts each month for the monthly visa run. With those new rules, a number went home, never to return, perhaps enough cash in the bank, perhaps not.

So, IF these new rules are applied as stated, a girl can stay at most 9 months before having to return home for a month. Thing is, as everything here, the rules can be interpreted as the official wants, so "earlier" renewal denials MAY happen. And what about a girl who does take the enforced vacation for a month? Will another 9 months be tolerated for someone with no discernable source of income?

So that fav who you've enjoyed for a LONG time... perhaps her next attempt at a visa run will be a return home, she already over the threshold.

And perhaps, for some, more incentive to overstay. I'd expect more visa status checks outside bars. And a bar where too many overstayers are found? That's a business that causes the authorities trouble, and we all know what happens then...

Is the sky falling? No, but it's NOT blue sky either. Uncertainty in a wg's career length translates to even more upward pressure on prices. She'll want to repay the debt to get here, her daily overhead, and start building that profit even more quickly.

Perhaps as before, our loss will be Bahrain's, Qatar's, and Oman's temporary gain.

As Garth Algar said: "We fear change."

i just find it incredulous that you personally would not make some sort of stand if it happened to you?
I wouldn't even consider making the booking.

1. Why spend money for a hotel when my accomodations are just fine FOR ME?

2. I wouldn't worry about anything happening to me at the hotel. But her? She just doesn't carry the same weight as me, that CIS/PRC/African passport much lighter than my own. So out of consideration for her...

In fact, on the other forum, not too long ago, a punter described how his taxi had been stopped by police at a checkpoint, and his date taken away when she identified herself as Russian.

An Iranian with a CIS GF checking in explains a helluvalot.

I have no doubt they were rude to him and his friend, he is the "wrong" color and carries the "wrong" passport.

I have known Asian gents in DXB who had to wave their UK passport to even get in a club!

This is a well documented, disgusting fact of life in the UAE, and he would have possibly let himself in for some real trouble if he had pushed the matter.

Damned shame, but reality is different in the UAE depending upon where you are from.

I know two CIS girls who are recently back in the UAE and are just planning on overstaying, they figure the fine is less than the visa runs. Go figure.

No - it's called Fujairah Beach Motel. No website, but you can google the hotel contact phone number (try different spellings, eg, Fujaira, Fujeira, Fujeirah). I stumbled across the place by accident as I was driving around there. It's on the right-hand side of the main roundabout as you leave Fujairah to head towards Khor Fakkan (I love saying Khor Fakkan!) )

Mostly local guys staying there (one of those 'local secrets'), and a few Indians. A bored old security guy wanders around the grounds, but once you're in your room, it's all yours. I keep meaning to stay there again - I like the place.

BTW fellow members - no more Melvin Camel jokes for you non-responsive bastards. It took me a full three minutes to edit that news article. I'm a busy man (obviously ).

Piper,

Why on earth would you waste even three minutes on Mel the lad?

Me, I am just dying to purchase an Accor card with his "free bottle of wine" for Mel code number. I mean why not help out a helpful guy like Mel?

I guess my gold Accor "frequent guest" (free, just stay there alot) with the F&B discounts, free room upgrades, fruit baskets etc. is just not enough!

He is the poster boy for "friends don´t let friends post drunk."

Will chip in on the debate on the check-in issues at hotels.

From the beginning this “policing of guests” was not focused at P4P – P4P is just being caught up within this regulation.

Hotels are required by LAW to register EVERY person visiting a guest room, whether staying overnight or not. When you do the standard check-in on arrival, the reception will take a copy of all passports and these are scanned into an online LE system, together with info on where you have come from & length of stay (taken from the card you complete.). If the LE discover an unregistered guest the hotel will be fined Dhs 5,000 on the first case, then Dhs 10,000 for every unregistered guest after that.

How will the LE know if you register all guests or not? – they do simple audits (not P4P focused) and if the hotel is not entering the data properly (i.e. they do not register anybody in the room, they mistakenly register 6 people in 1 room, they scan the Mr. but not Mrs., thus makes a discrepancy with immigration arrivals) – all these issues makes the LE “focus” on the hotel to enforce the rule properly, and the management to avoid the fines.

When you walk in with a "guest" it will be down to the reception / security / concierge to judge whether to approach you or not and enquire about your guest.

The LE does monitor this. I was skeptical at first when they told me this, given the volume of people that check-in every day in Dubai, but experience shows that suddenly the LE will turn up at the hotel and ask questions about a person THEY KNOW is staying there, how long, and who is with them. Obviously the information is taken from the database.

The amount of enforcement by the hotel (which will include registering married couples or not) will be down to a combination of issues the LE has with the hotel and management policy - and will not be easy to know which one is the factor driving the enforcement by staff. If the LE has “focused” on a particular hotel for a period, you can be sure management will be instructing staff to take a tougher line. If management take no notice, then the LE can object to renewing the trade Licence of the hotel at its next renewal – something they are not afraid to mention when they visit.

This will explain why some hotels like York get away with a good P4P bar as they have a strict policy with guests, which gives them no LE issues on their rooms – the LE (upto now) have been rather relaxed with bars as there is CCTV recording everyone who goes into / out of such venues.

I believe LE are more focused on terrorist / organized crime issues, as opposed to P4P, it is just that P4P is caught up (which is what most of us spend a good deal of time doing!!) in any tightening of rules.

My opinion – P4P will not go away. The authorities will always do the PR bit of shutting places down, purges, etc – no different to London or other cities. The P4P scene will no doubt change and adapt to the new rules, but there will always be P4P – more girls, less girls, lower quality, higher prices – who knows….

Selective enforcement by the LE is a key issue - whether we like it or not – the more of a rumpus you make with the LE or locals the more they will “throw the book at you” – trying to argue and fight for something that is against the law will not get you anywhere – frustrating as it is – especially when you see others getting away with it.

I was also interested to discover that young single people can now get Student visas, sponsored by establishments in say knowledge village. Here people can apply and have the option to get residential accommodation or not. Of course there will be a requirement to attend and pay for courses, but still another avenue to get a visa.

Looking forward to some bachelor time myself in July!!
