You are correct; many Chinese and Koreans.
As you probably know, there are two services available--incall (their place) and outcall (your place).
If you go to any of the incall apartments, it really is hit-or-miss, however, if you call some of the outcall services (check the many ads in the last pages of the Village Voice... ) you can request a Thai lady... and do not forget to tell them that you speak Thai and will send back any non-Thai that shows up!

When on a fishing expedition, I rather do incalls. Have you or anyone out there heard of a Thai independant or an incall place with Thais. Come on you guys, I know someone out there has a good tip for me.

I live in NYC and have never heard about a TG working for an incall or escort agency. Supposedly there are a few with whom it's possible to make private arrangements, but then you have to know someone who knows someone who can put you in contact with the girl.
The reason is that it's extremely difficult for TGs to get visas to the U.S. Aside from those who qualify for student or work-related visas, the only TGs who succeed are those married to or at least engaged to American citizens. If the INS even suspects she's engaged in prostitution, her visa will be canceled and she'll be sent back immediately to Thailand. Not many TGs who have a visa to be in the U.S. are willing to endanger it by working incall or outcall.
The exception would be if she has U.S. citizenship. Once she's a U.S. citizen, she can't be deported even if she's convicted of a prostitution-related crime. There may be some naturalized TGs who've gone back to their old trade after getting a U.S. passport, but they would probably be at least 30, as the minimum age in practice for getting a fiancee or marriage visa is 22 and it takes five years at least to get citizenship.
Also, I've heard there are girls in the business who are ethnically Thai, i.e. both parents Thai, but have grown up in the U.S. or are U.S. citizens from birth. They may look Thai, but they're American in manner, no different that any other U.S. chick. You're more likely to find them in California than NY.
Bottom line- It's difficult to find TGs in NY. Very few who work for agencies or houses will speak Thai. What the agency will try to do is pass off any Asian girl as Thai. If you're determined to meet a TG in NY, it's better to try through one of the on-line friend's finder services and see if she's amenable to cash compensation.
Or if LOS is too far, you can also find TGs in Amsterdam or Germany because the visa rules aren't as strict as for the U.S. But as Italia Thug points out, you can almost pay for a ticket to LOS for the cost of all but the shortest sessions with real TGs.
