Desperate for suggetions.
I'll be in Bali for a few weeks at the beginning of June---Sanur and Ubud and perhaps another city (suggestions? outside of Kuta?). Since I will be there for other reasons, and since I am dulled and stressed at the same time, I am not looking for any heavy action just massage and a bit more if possible.
Also does Ubud or Sanur have anything similar to the beer bars of BKK? (I'm too old for techno clubs).

Ubud is one of my favorite places on the planet, but don't look for any beer bars or other obvious action there. There are a few late night clubs, I am told, but personally I've never wanted to stay up late enough to check any of them out.

Don't expect too much there.
PUTRA BAR, Jl. Monkey Forest (every night live music ranging from Reggae to rock), MAGIC BAR, Jl. Monkey Forest (live music and sometimes great atmosphere), JAZZ CAFE, Jl. Tebesaya (live music and jam sessions on different nights), EXILE BAR (Saturday nights only, great music), and FUNKY MONKEY (early hours cafe).
SANUR & NUSA DUA
Some quite popular places in Sanur are the BORNEO PUB on Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the TROPHY PUB in front of the Sanur Beach Hotel. Both, however, close around 1:00 a.m.
If you want some real Action than best head over to Kuta.

It has been a few years since I have been to Bali, and I know what you mean by wanting to stay away from Kuta. Unfortunately I found little outside of there for someone just in Bali for a short vacation. I did find that the Hard Rock café was a good place to find some action. I not sure if the quality was any better but most dressed extremely nice so you felt that you were getting Hi Class.
I had my best luck just walking down Jalan Kartika Plasa near the Holiday Inn in Tuban in the middle of the afternoon. I had several women pull over in their cars and ask me if I would like to take them to dinner. It was dinner, then dessert at my hotel and then a second helping of dessert then breakfast.

Too late for the last poster, but for the board:
In Sanur, try the Blue Eye Club in the Hotel Genesis/Spa (Bye Pass Rd.). Pretty interesting place with some free style karaoke, if you get my drift. Sanur is more of a hard core scene than the freelance joints below.
As for the more standard places like MBargo, Huu Bar and so on, get ready to stay late. There is lots of freelance action, but things don't get rolling until nearly 1 or 2 am at MBargo and so on.
Some of the other places are more geared toward young Aussies (Bounty), so I avoid those. Paddys same same, but a slight notch above.
Sky Garden is not bad.
