I am curious to know what members do when travelling around BKK by day especially. Is it normal to use a small bag to carry your posessions or do you just use your pockets. I am thinking of Maps. Travel Literature etc.

i never have a problem in LOS.
all my stuff is carried around in a rucksack and everything is fine.

many times i have entered a bar and had to leave for certain reasons and have left it there.
staff have always looked after it for me.

When I travel to Bangkok this November (I can't wait!), I will be carrying a pouch bag that goes around your neck, and around your waist.  This pouch will contain all my valuables, and is pickpocket proof.

I use a small slung-across-the-chest bag that has room for all my stuff including a bottle of water.  I usually place it behind but move it to the front in a crowded place.

I carry a small compass too, comes in handy when checking maps. Taxis and tuks tuks descend faster than flies to shit whenever I do that.

Appreciate all the replies. With normal common sense precautions I imagine it should be quite safe carrying your things in a bag , and keeping excess cash t/cs passport etc in a hotel safe.

Always concious when looking at maps how you can attract the "helpful"  loitering vultures.

i don't need to stand on a corner looking at a map to attract the tuk-tuks,motorbikes and the rest of the helpful people.

they find me easily enough, just pester me as i walk down the road.
during the day i carried a rucksack and at night i had a bum bag big enough to hold my money, camera and cigarettes.

Room safes are notoriously insecure, hotel safes' security varies with the hotel (sometimes the staff will steal from you) and so I recommend neither.

Keep your main cash in travellers checks, cash them judiciously as needed, and that way the bulk of your money is readily replaceable if stolen.

The best pockets to use are upper chest and should have locking closures (button, or zip) and that is where your cash, T-checks and passport ought to go. This is a difficult location for a casual not so talented pickpocket.

No one will steal your maps.

All that said no one has stolen from me SUCCESFULLY in 15 years, but it wasn't for want of trying, on occasion.

Hey guys, I always wear a nice pair of cargo pants during the day while I'm out seeing the sights. Not the kind with a zillion pockets all over the place. Just a simple pair with one large pocket on each leg at around knee level. Good for carrying lots of things including my flask of water ( Yes guys it really is water ). Also makes it harder to steal from when you have to reach that far down. Peace

I use my backpack to carry around just the essentials during the day (maps, dictionaries, water, hat, etc).  Usually I keep my passport and other important stuff at the hotel safe.  At night I dont carry around a backpack, whatever I need to carry, I put in my pockets.  If you need to carry a backpack at night, in bars it is basically safe to leave it at your table, just ask the waitress to look out for it.  It was a really good feeling to be out with some of the brothers and to have that instant feeling of trust (even if I had just met some of them) when having to leave my stuff.  BKK gets a bad rep for ripoffs and thefts, but in general, I think that is in the minority, I have never had any problems or felt unsecure.  That being said, act appropriately (dont go waving expensive cameras and huge wads of cash) and saying how wasted you are.

KMan, as for laptops, when going to the office, I usually shed my laptop bag and stick my laptop into my backpack along with DC plug and dongle.  I get mixed vibes from some Thai coworkers (I think the show of a laptop is impressive and becoming what mobile phones used to be).  Sometimes I hit a Starbucks and do some work (I've heard that some Starbucks have the Wi-Fi/802.11B wireless ports).  When heading out at night I never take my laptop (dont want to risk it or have to lug it around).
