Just curious if anyone knows if there is a good place to ride bikes, on and off road, in BKK without getting ran over? I love to ride at home, and have never even thought about riding in BKK.

BKK, love it as I do, has got to be the worst place imaginable for any physical activity that has to take place outdoors. It's way too hot, the air is way too polluted, and the roads are way too shabby. The best place that I know (and I speak from a tourist's pespective - locals would have better info) is Lumphini Park. If you can brave the humidity, this place should fill the bill. Lots of joggers there.

Chickin. I have seen allot of guys riding along the frontage road at Rama 9. If you come out of BKK and head towards Chon Buri, on the right hand side is a small bike shop and theres allways lots of bikes around there. I wanted to buy a new mountain bike, but first the price scared me to death and then the prospect of riding on the road was enough to stop that foolish idea

I have been to Luphini Park many times and should know the answer, but can you bike in the park?

Thats right, dont go to Lumphini Park to have any fun or the "Fun Police" will come over tell you to stop everything.

"I have been to Luphini Park many times and should know the answer, but can you bike in the park?" Why not? I don't know Bangkok's municipal bylaws, but I would be really surprised if cycling there is prohibited. Any locals care to comment?

I have decided not to bother with the cycling lark in Bkk. Last month I brought two racing bikes into Bkk from overseas. I decided to ride them from my friend's apartment on Suk 71 to my new apartment on Suk 77. It was only about 3km but it was a shambles. The roads in Bkk have to be the worst (Manila?) I have seen for cycling. They look ok from a car but close up they are absolutely appalling. A mtn bike would be ok on these surfaces but you would still have to contend with the traffic & fumes. As for cycling in the provinces. The traffic would be less but the main roads are equally as poor as Bkk. The only possible alternative is off-road mtn biking which is pretty much the same anywhere in the world! Do yourself a favour & join a gym!!

Its very nice to go bicycling on Ko Kret Island (one day rent 40 Bht, not much cars around) or in Ancient City, Samut Prakang - bikes already included in the Farang 300 Bht entrance fee.
