One of the most absurd aspects of living in Thailand is the high level of duty levied on wine - beer and spirits are both reasonably priced but GOOD wine is often prohibitively expensive here...
So it was wonderful to discover V9, a new wine bar on the top of the Sofitel in Silom (previously the unprepossessing Monarch Lee Gardens), on the 37th floor with the best view in town and with a superb - and well priced - selection of both reds and whites (and no, I don't have shares in it...)
Go on a friday or saturday evening after 9pm and the clientele is also delicious, some gorgeous Thai and also Indian/Thai girls were there last night - to the chagrin of my somewhat jealous wife !
Does anyone else have any good tips as to where to find good wines at a realistic price ?

Sydney?  Perth??

Realistic pricing is just not to be had in Thailand to my knowledge... even at retail. Thanks for the post, though.... I am always on the lookout for the "least unrealisitic" cost for decent wine.

best thing still is to bring your own wine to dinner and pay the levied cover charge for it usually around thb 500 per bottle.
as for the view the sofitel is nice but there are much nicer options available such as the 'highest al fresco' restaurant in the world in the banyan tree on sathorn. this is a really outstanding view on the 63rd floor, they also feature a thai restaurant on the 61st floor and a chinese on the 62nd floor!

Had a few great wines at reasonable prices at Baan Khanitha, Suk Soi 23.  I never thought any bottles in BKK could survive the heat and usually avoid the stuff in hot areas of Asia, but these wines had been well kept.

aesthete & griffin:

Are there dress codes at the places that you've suggested for good wines,  in Bkk?

Will a half sleeved shirt sans tie, plus a decent pair of trousers suffice, or does one have to don full battle dress, by which I mean a suit & tie?

Zip; you don't have to go "full dress" for anything in Thailand anymore that I know of.... maybe a funeral.  The "casual" you describe will be plenty for all but the most formal situations.... you can certainly go suit/tie if that's your preferred style but I would dress down enough so that the apparel doesn't inhibit the flexing of your arm....

PS:  a note on where not  to go for fair value in wine...  I got stuck at the Hilton yesterday and the wine list pricing was astonishing, even by Bangkok hotel standards.  (Jacob's Creek grenache goes for about 520 at retail and the Hilton charges 1,950++)  Don't get trapped there without bringing your own bottle....

the novotel lotus on sukh soi 33 advertises that all their restaurants serve wine at supermarket prices.

they have some arrangement with villa supermarket. btw at the villa market soi 33/1 on the mezzanine floor you can find wine at discount prices.

anyway, it's a pity that wine available at retail in france for 5 euro is sold in los for equivalent of 30 euro!

Sydney - definitely not. The Hunter wouldn't know a good wine (Red) if it fell over it. As for JC, its dish water and sometimes used to wash the car with or you socks.

Perth - If your referring to the Margret River area, yes they have some excellent wines. You really need to go Mid and South ie to SA and VIC, particullarly if you are into Reds and not LBFMs.
