Yes, in general, Bangkok is one of the safest cities in the world.

The pickpocket zone is mainly around Hualomphong train station and on buses that serve that area. Backpackers, those buses are also well known for razor artists so your backpack is no protection unless it is made out of kevlar and chain mail.

But the ladyboys are notorious pickpockets so be very careful in areas where they congregate.

I just leave my laptop out in the room. I really do not think that the maid or security will go into the room and remove the laptop. I also keep the laptop either off, or if I leave it on, I lock the screen. Never know who wants to poke around on your system!! ha ha ha!!

As for the money,  I use the safe, but always keep some on the money in the suitcase. Never leaving all the travels checks in one area. As thing for passport. I always travel with 3 copies. I leave the actual passport in the safe, a copy in my carry on, a copy in my luggage and then I carry one on me.

But, I agree with Chateau Jade that BKK in general is very safe.
