Quote: from Valetta on 9:38 pm on Nov. 29, 2007 Ignoring any security concerns cash gives a higher net rate of exchange than traveller`s cheques because there are no taxes payable when exchanging cash.
Actually, the exchange rates for cash and travelers cheques are about the same when you factor in small fees paid to cash a travelers cheque. This assumes your traveler Cheques are at least in $100 denominations each, since part of the fee is paid per cheque. If you bring $500 cheques, it is a better exchange rate than cash. It is not a legitimate argument to compare the exchange rate on one day for cash against the exchange rate for travelers cheques on a different day (or at a different bank). As you mentioned, travelers cheques always have a higher exchange rate before the fees at a given bank. This is because the banks do not have to worry about counterfeits bills when cashing traveler cheques (which happens with a certain percentage of paper money no matter how careful they are). The reason for this is that companies that issue the travelers cheques (such as American Express) guarantee payment if the bank that cashes the travelers cheque follows certain identification procedures (in a similar way that credit card transactions are guaranteed once an authorization is received by the merchant, even if it is later determined to be a stolen card). "Ignoring any security concerns...". How can one ignore security concerns? A certain percentage of people are going to loose their cash or have it stolen. The results can be catastrophic for someone on vacation far away from home. Considering that the net exchange rate for cash and traveler cheques is about the same, the ability to be reimbursed for lost or stolen cheques makes it a no-brainer.

Easy to see which exchange rates are better: Use http://www.xe.com for exc.Rates outside Thailand Use http://www.bangkokbank.com for exc.Rates in Thailand you'll find that 99.99% of the times, it's better to change your cash while in LOS.

The main point of my post was that you get a better rate of exchange for $US in Thailand.I concede that if you exchange a $US500 traveller`s cheque you will get more baht than for $US500 cash.I confess I had in mind a $100 traveller`s cheque and $100 cash, in which event you can do better with cash as some banks in Thailand have significantly reduced in the last 1-2 years the premium enjoyed by traveller`s cheques over cash. But you will only get more baht for high domination traveller`s cheques if you have been able to buy them from your US bank without paying a commission.I acknowledge that for some the security that traveller`s provide will prove decisive bearing in mind that any advantage cash enjoys is small. However,I repeat my main point was that it is much better to exchange $US in Thailand.

ST: THB 500 - 1000, usually 500 (FS with a massage girl after having a thaimassage), and 700 + barfine at bars LT: THB 800 - 1200, usually 1000, but sometimes the girls are good negotiators and then I am prepared to negotiate. LT is preferable because usually you do not have to pay a barfine if you pick your lady outside a bar. In addition I use to tip 100 - 500 if I am happy, and for longtimers I usually pay a taxi, 100, even though they go by bus.

Well, just took a tour of the gogos in Nana and they are all expecting 2000 ST. Took one back without inquiring about the price. Slipped her 1500 in the purse while she showered, she picked it up and said "only 1500?". I can understand rate increases. But I was paying an average of 1000 ST in late 2006. Has the expectation really DOUBLED in Bangkok?

Yeah, I'm sure learning the language would help. Seems like everything has gone up. The sellers at Pantip wanted 100 baht per disc for dvd series. At 500 baht for a 5 disc tv series, might as well buy it brand new for a little more. Oh well, guess it couldn't last forever.
