skytrain to ekkamai about 35 baht,
bus to pattaya about 150 baht,
baht bus from bus station to hotel, about 25 baht...
saves 1000 baht and takes maybe 20-25 minutes more
and is easy as pie...travel with locals and get a feel for LOS
at the same time; it's a win-win situation

You are also much...... much safer on a bus than in a taxi driven by a time pressed driver who may have little experience driving in LOS.
I bus it whenever I can.

On a taxi ride from PTY to BKK I thought the driver looked a little worn out, past that large rest stop I watch his head droop down to where his chin came to rest on his chest, his eye lids were going from half open to closed, I gently shook his shoulder not to startle him thinking he might swerve into other traffic, he 'came to' o.k. I gave him my water bottle to splash his face.
I tried keeping a coversation going, this poor guy spent 7 days & 6 nights inside that taxi, the 7th night he spent at home w/his family
Sometimes that 3rd world shit bothers me
Anyway, a question, can you walk from the sky train stop to the Ekkamai bus depot?

I do agree that the bus is economical and saves quite a bit.
However, the ease of a taxi (or van) outweighs the cost. Pick up from your hotel/homer and drop off at the hotel in Pattaya.
The costs for bus are: taxi to Ekemai (from Sukhumvit Tourist Belt) : 50 baht, bus: 128 baht, shared songtaew to hotel: 20 baht.
Beware that your hotel should be on a route of a shared songtaew. If it isn't you can get a motorcycle or private songtaew for 50-100 baht.
