Craig.... right; actually I meant restaurants in Sydney, not the area as a producing region. Same with Perth... (do you know Wino's in MR?) My personal favorite is the Barossa area, but I have drifted off the thread. Imagine some poor jerk paying 1,950++ for JC at the Hilton? Makes you weep.

A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Australian table wines. This is a pity, as many fine Australian wines appeal not only to the Australian palette, but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain. "Black Stump Bordeaux" is rightly praised as a peppermint flavored Burgundy, whilst a good "Sydney Syrup" can rank with any of the world's best sugary wines. "Chateau Bleu", too, has won many prizes; not least for its taste, and its lingering afterburn. "Old Smokey, 1968" has been compared favorably to a Welsh claret, whilst the Australian wino society thoroughly recommends a 1970 "Cote du Rod Laver", which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule: 8 bottles of this, and you're really finished -- at the opening of the Sydney Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every half an hour. Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is "Perth Pink". This is a bottle with a message in it, and the message is BEWARE! This is not a wine for drinking -- this is a wine for laying down and avoiding. Another good fighting wine is "Melbourne Old-and-Yellow", which is particularly heavy, and should be used only for hand-to-hand combat. Quite the reverse is true of "Chateau Chunder", which is an appellation controle specially grown for those keen on regurgitation -- a fine wine which really opens up the sluices at both ends. Real emetic fans will also go for a "Hobart Muddy", and a prize winning "Cuiver Reserve Chateau Bottled Nuit St.-Wogga Wogga", which has a bouquet like an aborigine's armpit. (with thanks to E.Idle)

"Hill of Grace" probably ranks as one of the greatest reds available anywhere .... unfortunately the days have long gone when it was in my price range of $30 - now about $130 - Not perhaps as well known, but try any "Margret River" WA red - you wont be dissapointed, - at least the Kiwi whites are catching up, "withers Hill" a very good Sauvignon blanc - sadly, like the others mentioned, not available in LOS - and in any case, some good refs I have brough here, dont seem to taste quite as good - I do think some wines dont "travel" as well as others IMHO

tpeye: You astound me (for someone who is not an Aussie, but actually has taste in wines -good choice) and yes you are correct. Bought my first bottle in 1994 for the pricely sum of AUS42.00 and now pay between AUS250-400 depending on the vintage. Please tell me, where would one go in Bkk to choose from the best selection of Southern Hemisphere wines?. The reason some of the better refs may not have tasted so good in Thai, is probably due to how they store them. Had the same problem in Jakarta at the duty free shops. There were these good quality wines, standing upright on the shelves in the main window area(open to all the sunlight) in temperatures that varied according to the "uselessness" of the AC system (particularly in window areas). And yes they then turned the AC off at 5pm even though it was still 32C plus outside. Intellegence personified. "Never buy it if it is displayed in an upright position"

Craig... doesn't seem to me like anyone does a very solid job with southern hemisphere inventory; Hardon mentioned Villa Sukhumvit (upstairs) earlier in the thread... that's the best I know of also but the guy is a francophile so he has 20 high-end Bordeaux for every one bottle of Oz or Chilean. It appears that the problem is at the importer/distributor level because no matter how many restaurants or retailers one visits, it boils down to the same few choices.
