First, I would like to offer my sincere condolences for your loss. Al Queda are barbaric, murdering thugs, yes. But mindless labeling them as such undermines the possibility to understand their inner workings and hence destroy them from within. I also feel that the fact that you had friends killed, puts you in a too biased position to rationally think about these matters.
don't anybody tell me he is a freedom fighter or another Mandela or Ben Gurion.
I think you are misreading Scobie. He is merely trying to illustrate that NOTHING is black and white. A good illustration of all this in the drug trafficking world is a recent read of mine: "Killing Pablo: The Hunt for the World's Greatest Outlaw" by Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0142000957/qid=1126699038/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-7694212-1104055?v=glance&s=books The inter-mingled, basically uncontrollable web of deceit (of CIA, Colombian National Police, US Army and Los Pepes) is truly mind-boggling.

I certainly hope you are not of those folks that wanted to provide Al-Qaeda people with psychologists to help them get over the shock of 9-11. ----------------------------------------------------- I also feel that the fact that you had friends killed, puts you in a too biased position to rationally think about these matters. Some people can think rationally when they are very angry. I happen to be one of them. Perhaps you are misreading my thoughts as well. I AM saying that MANY THINGS can be black or white. And Al-Qaeda being a bunch of murdering thugs is one of them.

It's hard to make rational arguments when you're dealing with people who (understandably) take irrational and intransigent positions. I feel for the poster who's position is influenced by being close to some killed by Al Queda and totally understand his point of view, or try to. I certainly empathise with it. But I have nothing but disdain for those who let their views be shaped (or dulled) into an unquestioning one dimensional view by Fox News, The Sun newspaper and the platitudes of Bush and Blair. Whatever happened to our ability to think for ourselves and understand that EVERY issue in life is complex. Which, let's face it, is 99% of the population.

I don't get Fox News any longer so my mind is being shaped by CNN, BBC, Sky News and Al Jazeera. Now who do you really think is getting the more balanced view of the news? Me or some guy getting Fox?

Thaksin's policy re Muslims is about the ONLY part I agree is in not only Thailands but also the worlds best interest. I especially like the fact he has bull-dozed the Muslim only schools and forced them to join and interact with the THAI society they are suppose to be part of. I just wish our Australian government would do the same thing. If they are NOT against the society and if they are not agreesors against the society they live in why do they need seperate schools ( brain-washing stations of hate). On the same line,, if they have nothing to hide why wear the head covers? once again if they wish to be part of a society ( in this case I talk of Australian society) then why hide,, what are you hiding?

I don't watch Fox News, don't read the Sun, loathe Blair and have little time for Bush. I spent much of my 20s and 30s fighting terrorists and have seen first hand the results of terrorism. Iexpressed an opinion at the start of this thread. I declared it as my opinion, nothing else. Scobie is as entitled to disagree with it as I am to express it. But don't pretend that you are the only one with a valid point of view.
